VANWINKLE, WILSON, D.AGEE, DAWSON & STILL TO WINNER'S CIRCLE AT 24 RACEWAY for June 13
by: Ron Lueck - 24 Raceway, Moberly, MO

MOBERLY, MO (June 16) - On one of the best & fastest track surfaces yet this season at 24 Raceway, and in his first win of the season in the A-modified class, Hannibal's Mark VanWinkle finally found the way back to the winner's circle after a couple of years.  Last week, VanWinkle had what looked like a sure win over Kevin Blackburn, but came up just one lap short and had to settle for 2nd.  This week, VanWinkle held off that same Fulton driver in all the laps and relegated Blackburn to 2nd place.  Blackburn battled at various times with David Holder, Matt Dotson and Porter Collins for 2nd, before getting that runner-up finish.  Collins of Clarence slid up the track on lap 17 and that event dropped him back to 3rd place, but ahead of Dotson of Sturgeon.

Columbia's Tyler Lewis had the early lead in the B-Modifieds for the first 6 laps, but then gave way to Fulton's Blake David on lap 7.  On lap 12, after a 3rd caution in the 15-lap feature, David was judged by track officials to be starting from the 3rd turn, instead of the 4th, and thereby jumping on the green flag.  Following 3 successive warnings, he was relegated to the rear of the remaining 16-car field.  Gary Wilson was then able to take the lead on the restart and hold it for the last 3 laps, after running in 2nd & 3rd for much of the race.  Hallsville's Galen Hassler finished in 2nd again for the 4th time in 5 weeks, after his win the prior week.  Lewis came in 3rd as David forced his way through the pack of B-mod cars to take 4th.

Again this week, the front running Sportsman drivers raced in an exciting tight order for their entire 12 laps.  Jeff Creed led early for the first quarter of the feature, but Kelly Smith driving in the 7-car for the 2nd week, came on to lead the rest of the race, with the exception of the final lap.  Derrick Agee had worked his way up from 4th to 3rd to 2nd in this caution free race until on the last lap, with Rick Girard also challenging for the lead, Agee and Smith went wheel to wheel with a lot of rubbing.  Smith had to give way to Agee who had the lower lane.  Agee took the flag coming out of turn 4 with a run to the finish line, with Smith letting him know his displeasure in the tactics used to get that win.  By mid-race, fans could tell this was not going to be a smooth finish, as Smith, Agee, Girard & Creed competed very hard for this one.  Smith came in 2nd, just ahead of Girard, and then Creed.

The Hobby Stocks had a single early race caution on the 2nd lap from an engine letting go in the Clayton Crump car and littering the track with parts.  Tim Dawson led this one by a big margin and led all laps.  Mike Wolfe got awarded 2nd after Kevin Renzelmann's car failed the post-race technical inspection.  Tom Creed finished in 3rd over Chase Breid.

Hornet drivers ran their race without a single caution and had an exciting 12 laps with lead changes that thrilled the crowd.  The front three finishers of Devin Still, Rob Chase and Brooke Hassler all took their turns in front as these three raced as a pack in close quarters for all of the laps.  In the end, Anabel resident, Devin Still got the first win of his racing career and soaked up the moment in front of family and friends.

Special thanks to the Burton racing family, Rachal, Kyle and Ray, for their contribution of a bicycle as the main prize for the Jr. Race Fan Club, won by young Max Noell.
