Q and A's with Ron Gough 1. The usual questions. Doug Wolfgang and Dale Earnhardt 24 Raceway before the pavement. I like them all. 2003 Chevy Impala 2. Can you describe what a typical night at the races is like for you? How you get pumped, and how you wind down after the races? Pumping up just comes natural. Like most racers I get a bit nervous before the main while sitting on the grid, but it goes away when you pull out on the track. If we had a bad night it doesn't take any time to come down off of the race high because the poor finish already did that for me. When we do well we could be up for a while that night. 3. Can you describe your racing career from beginning of the first time to the off time and on to the present? I started racing karts when I was around 10 years old. I bought that kart with money I had saved. I was immediately hooked. I was 18 when my dad and mom got our first Racemart modified. I was pretty erratic at first, but we did manage to win a show at capital our first year racing. After 8 years of racing 2 and 3 nights a week we as a family decided that it was time to retire. We had a good run but we were all ready for a change. The time off was easy at first, but it kept getting harder to stay away from the track. I have finally teamed up with someone who has the same goals as my original team had, so we are ready to go full throttle again. 4. What accomplishment in your career are you most proud of? Winning the Moberly and Capital track championships, plus the Hawkeye Racing News all missouri points all in the same year. 5. Who do you least want to have to pass, and who do you least want behind you on race day? I love to pass everyone, that's the name of the game. There are so many people that are quick that it would be hard to pick one. Its cool when they are behind you, its when they pass you that sucks. 6. In the past you earned 3 24 Raceway championships, and a Capitol Speedway championship, when you look back on these accomplishments how does it make you feel, and how determined are you to be on top again? Anytime you can win a track championship it is a great accomplishment. I am proud of those and all of the races that I have won. I am most proud of the most popular driver awards that I have received at Moberly. I have 4 in all and they are all on the wall in the bedroom. As far as being on top again, my team is very driven toward that goal. I don't feel we are so focused on points racing though. We are more interested on winning races (and money) and one of our primary goals is to get quick enough to win a USMTS race. 7. If you were in the points lead at 2 different tracks and they had a scheduled event for the same night how would you determine which race to go to? I would head to the track that satisfied my fans and advertising partners most. 8. What do you plan to do with your new racing career? We just want to be competitive wherever we go. 9. What do you think about the large following that the name “Ron Gough” gets, and what would you say to your fans if you could talk to each and every one? Its really odd. I have been out of racing for a while, yet you still go to Wal-Mart or somewhere like that and people will come up to you and say "are you Ronnie Gough?". I am just glade that people liked to watch me race and I hope to get back to that level again. If I could talk to every fan I would just tell them thanks for the support. That's really what its all about. 10. What one race you competed in stands out most in your mind? The $50,000 to win gold rush in Amirillo Texas. 400 Mods showed up. You got 2 laps of practice and then time trialed. We clocked in 34th, but didn't make the show. It was a blast being down there all week. 11. Who are (and were) your favorite race car drivers? Local level racers: Hank Delonjay. That man taught me more about racing because I followed him around the track more than I care to admit. Steve Fraise, That man could flat out wheel a late model. 12. What do you say to kids (and others) who would like to get into racing? Concentrate on having fun, not being the next NASCAR star. Requested Questions We were just burned out. We raced hard for
several years and we had to have a break from it all. The mods are certainly
faster. The Skyrocket chassis I am driving now hooks up like nothing I would
have ever imagined. Moberly before the asphalt was my favorite track. The track seemed a bit heavier then and would hold moisture better. Moberly after the asphalt is my second favorite. You have to be a communist not to love a super high bank 3/8 mile track. Thanks a lot Ron and congratulations on your feature win earlier this year.
We all hope to see you on top again and you are well on your way. |
