1. What has been your biggest achievement and biggest disappointment of the 2005 season so far? The biggest achievement in racing this year, somehow managing to keep us both in a car all season, all while managing to maintain some sort of family life. It definitely helps that Kristi helps as much as she can in repairing the cars. Racing is something that we all enjoy as a family. The friendships that are made on Saturday night also needs to be noted ! The biggest disappointment would definitely be the total destruction of the red car that I started the season with. It was wicked fast and sometimes scary to drive. It has been a very tough year for many. Next year has to be better.
2. If you had to watch the races from the stands this year which class would you enjoy watching the most? The OPEN Late Models ! OH ! , they don't run at 24. The Sportsman class is my next favorite. Maybe we will see the Late Models sometime in the future.
3. Are there other drivers in other classes at 24 Raceway that you enjoy watching and who are they? Jeff Creed, Pinky Dale and Larry Minor in the Sportsman Class Pinky, Larry Krog and Chad Walter in the Hobby class. I prefer that race cars have fenders, but there has been some great racing in the mod classes this year. Scotty Roberts, Kenny Mudd, Darin Walker, Kelly Smith, Hank Delonjay, Vance Wilson and Bob Woodrow have all provided us with some Good open wheel racing
4. If you had to pick one person to battle out the final laps of a race with and you would be content with winning or coming in second, who would it be? KRISTI CHASE ! Did you expect any other answer? I would love to be able to battle with her for 12 laps right up to the checkers fall with her narrowly getting the victory. Other than that, is any one ever content with 2nd ? There are a few others that I would like to see win if I couldn't. John Brown , Darren Morgan and Joe Evans have ran some good races and deserve one of those trophy's.
5. If the Hornet class had a face on it who would it be and why? I wouldn't put one face on the Hornet class. There are several names that come to mind when the Hornets are mentioned. Just look at the points race. There are at least 4 cars with multiple wins and a total of about 8 different winners this year. 6. If 24 Raceway introduced a new class what class would you like to see come, and if you had to give up one to get that class which would you drop? Late Models would be the first choice. Remembering back to the '80's , when 24 raceway was at its peak, all of the names that I remember were Late Model and Sportsman drivers. The Sportsman cars then were allot faster than they are now and probably as fast as most of the Modified's. Those 2 classes provided the closest and best racing I have ever seen ! The trucks would be the first to get cut. The dwarf's either need to become weekly with a larger car count to provide a better show or cut them also. I would suggest a weekly Powder Puff class running only Hornets ( as most seem to do anyway ) in place of the dwarfs if they were to get cut. The powder puffs seems to raise allot of interest among the fans. 7. After your terrible crash this year, has that made you think about safety any more than before, and do you think others take safety seriously enough? No, it has always been a major concern, but it sure did make ke appreciate it. We have quality equipment and take safety seriously. I intend on walking away from anything that happens at the track and I will take advantage of anything that aids in doing so. When we bought our first car, the 33 car, in the fall of 2003, I was the first to drive it. That night Joe Evans rolled violently right in front of me in the feature. It hit me right then. I had not given much thought to the safety equipment until then. We had a stock seat and old rotten belts. Safety became an issue right then. No, I don't think safety is a great concern to allot of drivers. I have seen roll cages in Hornets and Hobbies that shouldn't be allowed on the track. I have seen moderate crashes leaving bad bruises and bent seats due to seats being to big or belts not tight enough. I see old worn out belts that have turned grey from UV damage. A quality seat that fits properly and quality belts properly used are probably more important than a helmet. A good cage is an absolute must ! Any one interested in getting into racing needs to look and ask questions. Make sure you have good equipment and ask how to use it properly 8. Besides racing what do you do for fun? What kind of question is that ? If you race weekly, there isn't much time for any other recreation. I have a huge collection of radio control airplanes, cars and trucks but there hasn't been allot of time to enjoy them. We do go camping whenever possible, but drive to the track on Saturday to race. Sundays usually bring a trip to St Louis for the Zoo, Six Flags or anything else for the kids. Of course, this only happens when neither car was damaged the night before. 9. What do you plan to do in '06, are you going to continue to race in the Hornet class? '06 will probably be another year in a Hornet although it may not be weekly. We will probably run multiple tracks next year unless gas prices continue to climb. I would like to be in a Sportsman but finances will probably dictate another Hornet. 10. What would you say to your fans if you were asked to address them after a win or at an intermission interview? Get a good nights sleep , get up tomorrow and go find a car. Racing is allot more fun from where I sit. I have been in the stands, I like being on the track much more.
