By: Ron Lueck Both of 24 Raceway's fast classes of A-Modified and B-Modified, in some nail-biting and caution-free racing, provided some of the best competition to be seen anywhere in the mid-west on this night of August 6. And this was the prelude to the evening's 20-lap event of the Hobby Stock Special. Season points leader, David Holder of Clarence, put his #7 on the pole for the A-modified race, with the strong 66-car of Kenny Mudd's alongside. But as he came to the backstretch, Holder's car slowed and pitted, leaving Mudd to gain the lead for the 1st two laps, but not by much over row 2 starter, the #47 Dirt Works car from the company's headquarters in Walker, Missouri. The traveling A-mod is driven by long time Dirt Works Modified Race Car employee Andy Claiborne of Fort Scott, Kansas. In a drag race to the stripe, Claiborne then led Winfield's Mudd by less than a car length for laps 3 & 4 by running on the low side of the track. Mudd then came back to lead laps 5, 6 & 7 by about a wheel, again in a drag race and by staying on the upper line. Cecil Graves of Fulton, meanwhile, had his #14 dialed into the 3rd position the whole time as the 49-car of Sturgeon's Ben Ballard moved into 4th by lap 2. Claiborne came back to the front on lap 8 and held off Mudd in a great drag racing style for each of the remaining laps, winning in his initial visit here. Graves kept that 3rd position the entire race, finishing ahead of Ballard. Twenty-four Raceway's B-modified racing was equally as good, with Kevin Embree starting from the inside on the front row, and with David Holder getting the outside position for his 2nd front row start of the night. Embree took his familiar black & white #61 to the front over Holder's black 40-car for the first 2 laps. Bob Woodrow's green #3 moved into 2nd in front of Holder by lap 3 in a great move down low on the track. Woodrow continued making his move on the bottom side to take the lead from Embree on laps 4 thru 7. But by lap 8, Embree, with a move to the bottom to regain the lead over Perry resident Woodrow, stayed out front for the remaining laps. Woodrow has his hands full with trying to hold off Holder. By lap 14, Holder was back into 2nd, only to be edged out at the finish line by Woodrow. The win finally came Embree's way in only his 7th race of the season, after the Paris native competed three times each in June and July. Following Holder was Jim McKenney of Linneus finishing in 4th. The Hobby Stock Special started 21 cars in this 20-lap feature. A front row consisting of the #36 car of Dustin Boling from Clarence and Callao's Tim Dawson in the 28-car kicked off this event. Row 2 started Clabe Dougherty in the #41 and season points leader Clinton Dale with the 7-car. Boling led for 2 laps over Dawson before the spin by Jerry Shoemaker's #88s brought out the 1st caution. Dawson went to the front for the next 2 laps on the restart, over Boling, with Dale staying in the 3rd slot. By lap 4, Moberly's Dale moved into 2nd and stayed there until the lap 7 spin from Larry Krog's 6-car brought out yellow flag number 2. On the restart, with Dawson going low, Dale took the upper lane to challenge for the lead, but Dawson held on. Lap 9 saw the 3rd caution of the race as Centralia's Phil Crump went high and into the turn 2 wall in his return to the track after a few years away, and then collected the 01-car of Steve Hisle's. After clean-up of the radiator fluids from the Hisle car, the lap 10 restart saw Dawson still in the lead over Boling, with Dale back at 3rd. But this re-start was delayed due to Aaron Prather's orange #19 and Krog getting into each other on the front stretch. Back to green flag racing, Boling led down the back stretch, only to see Dawson lead at the line for lap 11, as well as laps 12 and 13. Boling finally got around Dawson to lead on lap 14, and keeping that lead for 2 laps. By lap 15, though, Dale was coming around Dawson's orange car for 2nd place. By laps 16 & 17, Dale was only a half car off the lead. And on the next, Dale got around Boling to lead the last three laps in his win over Boling in one tight bit of racing, with Dawson relegated to 3rd. Upon the post-race inspection, Boling's car was found to be in violation of Hobby Stock rules, in particular the one not allowing a "quick steer" device, so Dawson's finish was moved up a notch to 2nd. Tom Elson of Clarence stayed up near the front of the traffic for most of the race and thereby finished in 3rd, with Alan Hultz of Madison doing the same and getting 4th place. The Hornets class kicked off the evening's feature races with Josh Langhammer's #22 getting the premier starting spot next to Kristi Chase of Clark in her #3c. A turn 4 slide by Rob Chase in his 3-car and a 2nd car's slide set up the complete re-start of the race. Lap 1 was led by Columbia's Langhammer, but in turns 1 & 2, Kenny Edwards and Jeromy Milnes got together, slid sideways and were on the front end of a six-car wreck that involved last week's winner, David Lorton of Moberly, Rob Chase of Clark, and the 13x-car of Scott Brockman, also of Moberly. With a red flag to allow the wreckage clean-up, Langhammer once again led after the restart. Another yellow flag on the 4th lap from another spin, set up a green-white-checker finish. With this time-shortened race, Langhammer now joins Lorton and Rob Chase having three wins apiece. Jake Evans of Jacksonville kept his 6-car in the 2nd position throughout the caution-filled race, followed by the #11x of Higbee's Doug Byers. And the Sportsman class had an enjoyable race to watch too, with Darin Boling of Clarence getting the front-row start with his #8 Camaro next to the 01-car of Jeff Creed. These two ran in this 1-2 position for laps 1 thru 5, while the always hard-charging Creed kept pulling alongside on the upper lane of the track to challenge. Creed passed on the 6th lap, and then in turn 3, Clinton Dale got his #12 into Boling and both spun out, with Pete Agee spinning his #14 Chevy to avoid the wreckage. Boling and Agee went to the rear on the re-start, while Dale had to pit. Creed led on the restart for one lap, and Columbia's Rick Girard got his 00-car around him on the next lap to take the lap 8 lead. Creed led the rest of the way, while Boling and the 3k-car of Mexico's Bob Ketterer both spun out, but kept going in the right direction late in the race. Season points leader Creed got the win by a wide margin over Girard in this one. Alan Bergfield of Columbia finished in 3rd with his 73-car. This week, a bonus of two bicycles were given away through 24 Raceway's Jr. Fan Club give-away. The first, sponsored by Woodrow Racing of Perry, went to 7 year-old Dylan Goff of Mexico. And the lucky winner for the second bike, sponsored by Hartgrove Bulldozing of Clarence, was Casey Hilderman, an 8-year-old from Laddonia. And a bicycle safety helmet went to Cory Briggs, courtesy of the #9 Hornet driver, Darren Morgan of Paris, with more to come during the month of August. Congrats to all the winners of the prizes donated by track sponsors and drivers alike, and once again, thanks for your support. And a "thank you" card from the family of Brent Slocum, acknowledged the fans and drivers from here at 24 Raceway for their generous donation of $500 into the educational fund set up for daughter, Isabelle. Brent was a modified driver, who lost his life in a pit area accident on June 11 at 34 Raceway in West Burlington, Iowa. The management and staff of 24 Raceway, Moberly, MO, also sincerely thanks you for the donation. Coming up next Saturday night August 13th, will be the monthly show of those Northeast Missouri Dwarf Cars, in addition to the five weekly classes of A- and B-Modifieds, Sportsman, Hobby Stock and 4 cylinder Hornets.
