 7-9-2005 - Race Review

By: Ron Lueck

This week saw two familiar names return to both the A- and the B-modified driver's winner's circle after a bit of time between their last wins here at 24 Raceway, and a new name was added to the Sportsman winner's list as well. With 110 race teams coming to try out their skills against some of the best competition in Missouri racing circles, the crowd once again got to see some exciting racing in the six features of this night of July 9, 2005.

The Hobby Stocks, Northeast Missouri Dwarf Cars, and the 4 cylinder Hornet Classes all saw familiar names at the top of their respective winner's list, too. The 36-car of Dustin Boling had the pole for the Hobby race, and led all of it until retiring to the pits on lap 10, even through the two caution flags. Callao's Tim Dawson kept his orange #28 in 2nd throughout this and was rewarded with the win. Alan Hultz took 2nd and Columbia's Rob Sanders took a 3rd place finish, his best yet at 24 Raceway, with car #207. This number has a special significance as it is taken from the badge # worn by Columbia Police Officer Molly Bowden, who died February 10 from injuries received in the line of duty earlier this year.

A good crop of 13 Dwarf cars came to the track for their once-a-month event. Fulton's Caleb Chapman and Craig Spegal from New London had the front row, while Richie Berghager and Vandalia's Benny Burnett took up row 2. But it didn't take long for the strong running #64 of David Rafferty to come charging through to the lead. With Independence's Rafferty firmly entrenched in 1st, Berghager, in the #27s and also from New London, settled into 2nd. This is where they both finished, as the fight was for 3rd between Chapman's #46, Burnett's #40 and the #99 of Mark David. Chapman is the one who came out with 3rd over Burnett.

Twenty-one of the 22 Hornets that came to race, saw the #77 of Clarence's Kyle Chinn at the pole position for the first time. After a couple of restarts to get it going, David Lorton of Moberly took over the lead by lap 4 in his 24-7 car. By lap 8, Lorton and Chinn, running 1-2, got into the lapped traffic but held on to their positions all the way to the finish. Josh Langhammer, winner from 2 weeks ago and 2nd last week, made a valiant last lap try to take the 2nd position from Chinn, but could not pull it off, as Lorton picked up his first win since June 11.

The A-modifieds, also with a couple of restarts to get the feature started, had 7-time winner David Holder on the pole. The Clarence native led all laps in a caution-free race, once it got going. Kenny Mudd from Winfield, driving the #66 car, brought that car into 2nd place by lap 2 and stayed there for 16 laps, until coming along side Holder on lap 18. This attempt at the lead just didn't pan out for him as Holder had the car to beat again, so the 66-car had to settle for 2nd. Holder had not won since his 7-week winning streak ended with his last win on June 11th.

Now, the 15 Sportsman cars had the strange race of the night. The front row starters were Randy Rindom in the lime green #84 and Clinton Dale in the baby blue #12. By lap 5, previous winner Darin Boling of Clarence got his #8 into 2nd place behind Cairo's Dale. On lap 8, a spin by Gary Wilson, subbing in the #14 Chevy for Pete Agee, spun in turn 2 and the resulting yellow flag canceled out a move by the #01 of Jeff Creed to the front. On the restart, Dale continued in the lead as Creed's car got into the backstretch wall with a little help from a tap on the left rear, then rode the wall for a while before flipping onto the roof. After taking out the turn 3 signal lights, the white car with blue and orange trim skidded along the wall upside down for several feet. Creed emerged uninjured, but the car suffered severe damage. During the race-stopping red flag, Dale's car ran out of fuel. He emerged from the car, got gas from his near-by pit stall, fueled it himself and in doing so, got sent to the back of the pack on the restart. The leader was now Boling in his red Camaro, but when he got loose in turn 2, the #42 of Moberly's Charlie Rindom tapped him back into line, and then took over the lead. In the process, the front clip got knocked off the other white car with blue and orange trim, the #73 of Alan Bergfield, all of this with no yellow flag. Rindom, the one named Charlie, finished with the win, the first for any of the 3 Moberly drivers at 24 Raceway with the last name of Rindom. Dale came in 2nd following Rindom's car, but upon further review, the action of not going into the pit area to refuel (as indicated in the general rules) during a non-scheduled red flag, caused the 12-car to be disqualified.

With a $75 bounty to be given to the next driver to beat Kirksville's Kelly Smith, an additional incentive to win was present in the B-modified race, the final event of the night. Chuck Melloway, driving the #2B from Hallsville, held down the inside of row 1, alongside the #82 of Smith. But Smith had other ideas and pulled out to the lead right away. Bob Woodrow, driving the green #3 car, came charging up to challenge for the lead using the lower groove, while Smith stayed high. By lap 5, Woodrow got that lead from Smith and held it for the remainder of the race. With Woodrow leading over Smith by a comfortable margin, the race in this one was for 3rd between Jim McKenney's #7 and Chris Leather's #17. Linneus driver McKenney won this one for a 3rd place finish over Macon's Leathers, after the first two place went unchanged. Smith had won the last 4 races until this night.

Co-sponsors of the Jr. Race Fan Club bicycle give-away this week were Bob Hubert (aka Mr. Mopar) and the owner of the black #40 B-modified, and Dave Kinder, driver of the #3 Thunder Truck and the #23 A-modified. The bike winner for the week was six year-old Ashton Dale of Moberly. And now, this following guy is really on a roll: The 50/50 drawing winner was once again Warren Ross of Bynumville, MO, for the third time in the last month. With this luck, we hope he's playing Power Ball and Missouri Lottery too. That 35 mile drive just netted him another $198. As we have said in the past, give us a Saturday night to come out and enjoy the racing program, and next week just might be your turn at the lucky ticket number.

Up next on July 16th, will be there will be the 3rd of the scheduled powder puff races following the five classes of A- and B-Modifieds, Sportsman, Hobby Stock and 4 cylinder Hornets. Dirt Track Racing at its Best begins at 7pm with a driver's meeting, followed by hot laps, starting at 6pm. Kids ticket prices are $3 for ages 6 to 12, and adults are $9 for the grandstands. Pit passes are only $20. Please see the website of www.24racewayinmoberly.com for additional info and promotions.
