It was one hot Saturday, but with the one hour delay in the racing
program for evening, the weather came around to be much more comfortable, just
as the forecasters said it would. Those fans in attendance early, got to see a
surprise visit from a local racer, now having moved on to the big show. Yes,
that would be Columbia's Carl Edwards, now driving in both NASCAR's Busch series
and Nextel Cup series. Carl and his entourage stopped by the Moberly airport on
his commute from his Saturday afternoon race in the Colorado Springs area to
Sunday's Pennsylvania 500 in Pocono, just long enough to come over and catch his
younger brother, Kenny Edwards, in the heat race for the Hornet class. It would
have been nicer if Carl could have stayed longer, as Kenny finished much better
in the feature than he did in qualifying. Carl went on to a 4th place finish at
Pocono on Sunday while starting 41st, due to missing the qualifying. Can't be in
two places at once, but he sure is trying, and he is scheduled to be back in
mid-Missouri this week. Nice to have him and his family present for various
parts of the evening.
A front row consisting of Madison's Alan Hultz and the 88s of
Kirksville's Jerry Shoemaker led off a field of 19 Hobby Stocks for the first
race of the evening. Hultz led the first 3 laps in the 51-car, while Clarence's
Larry Krog passed Shoemaker into 2nd place on lap 3. Krog took his #6 into the
lead by lap 4, ran in front for the rest of the race and won over Clinton Dale
of Moberly. It was just the reverse of last week's finish when Dale beat Krog to
finish. Hultz, trying hard to regain the lead on lap 10, tagged the wall
instead. Shoemaker finished up 3rd. All of this looked like a good tune-up race
for the 20-lap Hobby Stock feature event coming up August 6th.
The 4 cylinder Hornets started of with the 55j of Joe Evans on the pole
and Adam Melloway's #11 of Hallsville outside. Evans led the first lap, before
surrendering the lead to Columbia's Josh Langhammer in the 22-car. Rob Chase
challenged Langhammer all race long with his #3, but was relegated to a 2nd
place finish behind him. And this was also just the reverse order from last
week's finish when the Clark native won over Langhammer. Kenny Edwards came up
charging hard through the pack to finish in 3rd.
A light turn out of only 7 cars the A-modified class, saw the fast
racecars of Vance Wilson's and Darin Walker's, both of the Bowling Green area,
start off on row 1. Walker grabbed the lead for the first 2 laps, until a
caution came from seasons points leader, David Holder's 7-car tapping the rear
of Wilson's #22c, getting sideways and then coming around in turn 2 while
running in 3rd. Wilson took over the lead shortly after the restart and stayed
there for the remainder of the race. On lap 9 during a 2nd caution, Walker's #24
was sent to the back of the field for stopping on the racetrack. This allowed
Kenny Mudd of Winfield in the 66-car to lock into the 2nd position where he
finished up. Walker made it back up to 3rd by the end of the feature. Wilson has
now won three of the last four features here at 24 Raceway in the class that was
earlier this season, dominated by Clarence's Holder. And it was a welcome back
to track for the familiar #27 of Moberly's Danny Lorton for his 1st race of the
season.
Alan Bergfield of Columbia and recent winner Charlie Rindom from Moberly
made up the front row for the Sportsman class, as they started with some
three-wide racing on the back stretch. The 01-car of Jeff Creed led the first
lap by inches over the others after coming through the lead row. On lap 4, last
week's winner Pete Agee took a wild ride on the turns 3 & 4 concrete wall, and
somehow managed to not flip over. The resulting clean-up of fluids from Agee's
car on the racetrack caused a race-stopping red flag. When racing resumed,
Creed, from Cairo, led all the laps in a tight finish over Darin Boling of
Clarence, followed for 3rd by Clinton Dale. The hardest fight was for 4th place
where Larry Minor beat out the Rindom brothers, Randy and Charlie, and all three
of Moberly. Creed last won 4 weeks ago.
The Thunder Trucks started out three-wide for something a little
different. It was the winner of the pole, Dave Kinder of Moberly in the #3, who
came out to the front and led all the laps for the win. Rick Thompson of Clark
was the runner up in the #18, followed by Dean-O Smith of Higbee.
Jim Gillenwater of Keokuk, Iowa and Chuck Melloway of Hallsville got row
1 positions to lead the B-modified field of 18 cars to the line. A 2nd row of
Macon's Tony Garner and the return of the black #40 of David Holder made up row
2. Melloway grabbed the lead while previous winner, Holder got that 40-car back
into racing shape by following Melloway to the finish line. Melloway led all the
laps in his dominant win, the 1st this season for him with his #2B car. Gary
Wilson of Holliday put his #11 car into 3rd place.
The Jr. Race Fan Club gave away a new bicycle to 6-year old Taylor Moore
from Huntsville. It was sponsored by Smith & Williams Racing of Kirksville, with
the #82 B-modified being driven by Kelly Smith. This week the 50/50 drawing was
a pot of $137 won by Charley Walters of Moberly. You could be in on these
winnings, but you must be present, and in the case of he 50/50 ticket, purchase
a ticket.
On July 30th, a Mechanics Race will follow the five weekly classes of A-
and B-Modifieds, Sportsman, Hobby Stock and 4 cylinder Hornets. Come out to
watch the guys who turn the wrenches, get to take their turns at turning the
steering wheel. Dirt Track Racing at its Best begins at 7pm with a driver's
meeting, followed by hot laps, starting at 6pm. Kids ticket prices are $3 for
ages 6 to 12, and adults are $9 for the grandstands. Pit passes are only $20.
