With 104 race teams showing up for business on a hot Missouri night in
July, and not including the ten women that signed up for the Powder Puff, it was
a relatively smooth night of racing. That is, until the fifth feature, being the
A-modifieds, took their respective turn at their feature. Up until this race of
the fastest class racing at 24 Raceway, there were only two cautions - total -
along with one race-stopping red flag in the B-modified division.
The Hobby Stocks started off with a front row of Steve Hisle in the red &
white 01-car and the red & yellow 88s of Kirksville's Jerry Shoemaker on the
outside. A second lap/turn 2 spin by Shane Stone in the 26-car brought out the
only caution of the race. Race leader, and season points leader Shoemaker, had
to exit the race with a broken right rear axle. Clarence's Larry Krog took over
the lead, followed by Columbia's Casey Creason in the 27x, and Clinton Dale in
the 7-car. By lap 7, Dale was coming on strong to took over the lead by lap 9.
Dale, now living in Moberly, went on to the winners circle for the first time
since June 27. Krog finished in 2nd with his red #6 car, followed by Creason.
Next came the 4 cylinder Hornets with pole sitter Rob Chase putting
another competitive car together for this second half of the season in his
hometown of Clark. Some fast cars started near the front, with the red #74 of
Jeff Hilderman, the black 25-car of Kenny Edwards and David Lorton's 24-7 car
completing the first 2 rows. After Kyle Chinn charged through the pack to lead
the 1st lap, the rest of the group made the race look like it had all the
potential of a "Daytona big one". By lap 3, Chase came out of that pack of front
runners to lead 5 others including Chinn in the 77-car, Edwards, Lorton,
Hallsville's Adam Melloway, and Josh Langhammer in the 22-car. By lap 7,
Moberly's Lorton and Melloway both pitted, leaving Chase alone out front,
followed by Chinn with a lot of space to make up. Chase won this thing, hands
down, followed by Columbia's Langhammer in 2nd, and all of this in an exciting
caution free race!
With lightning flashing in the southeast, the B-modifieds started 22 cars
with Chuck Melloway of Hallsville getting the pole position in his #2B. Kelly
Smith had his #82 on the outside of row 1, and charged into the lead from there.
A lap 4 turn 4 spin by the 69A of Adam Hombs brought out the only yellow flag of
the race. But a 5-car pile up in turn 1 on the restart got the race stopped with
a big red flag to tow off some of the cars and clean up the fluids. Of the 5
involved, only the #23 of Casey Walter and Porter Collins in his #46, both of
Clarence, got to continue. Those leaving were: Ashland's Steve Roberts in the
baby blue 002, the 00-car of Brookfield's Rob Maxwell, and Moberly's Mike
McCarty in his #96. With a return to green flag racing, once the 43-car quit
jumping on the restart, it was all Smith in this one. Bob Woodrow took his
#3-car from 3rd to 2nd on a back-stretch pass of Melloway on lap 11 and finished
there. Smith, from Kirksville, returned to his winning ways after placing 2nd
last week and finishing 1st for the 4 weeks preceding that.
It was a familiar front row for the Sportsman class, with Clinton Dale in
the #12 and Huntsville's Pete Agee back in the driver's seat of the 14-car. Agee
led all 12 laps in the second caution-free feature race of the night. Darin
Boling, with his #8 Camaro, and Dale both tried and stayed up at the front in
some tight racing, but could not get around Agee on this night, with Pete
getting his 3rd win of the season.
Now, came those A-modifieds, with the 21m of David Melloway, Hallsville,
and the 30-car, driven by Scotty Roberts, making up row 1. Row 2 had Hannibal's
Bill Baker in the 03-car along side Keith Fisher's #68 from Fulton. Kenny Mudd
in the 66-car and Vance Wilson in the 22c-car made up row 3. On the first half
of lap 1, Wilson clipped the front of Baker's car who then got into Fisher and
this started the 1st of 9 cautions all in the first 3 laps. One of those was a
red flag from Roberts getting that 30-car of fellow Columbia resident Keith
Davis, into the turn 1 wall. This wreck required two tow trucks to remove the
car, and during the stopped race, crew members began sheet metal work on the
17-car of Macon's Chris Leathers while sitting on the track. This is what got
him the DQ for the race, as only a single crewman is allowed over the wall to
administer water only to the radiator and/or the driver. Once all those cautions
were out of the way, from lap 4 on, there were 11 cars remaining of the 15 that
started the feature. Wilson from Frankford, Mo, simply was running way too far
out front to allow the 6-car of runner-up Richard Foster from Holts Summit to
get to him. Wilson got this win on the heels of his Firecracker Forty win just
two weeks ago. Mudd, from Winfield, took 3rd, followed by season points leader
David Holder, holding onto 8 wins for the year in the #7-car.
And the final race of the evening was the 4th scheduled Powder Puff event
for the season. Although the 1st got rained out, Nicky McCarty won the 2nd, and
then canceled the 3rd one by herself with her memorable wreck at the start. This
race is with the fendered cars of the Hobby Stock and Hornet class cars, and had
ten entrants. Only 7 of those still had cars in driving shape when this race
came around after the end of the others. The #1 Hornet car driven by Tabitha
Moenck of Mexico took it away it grand form in both the heat and the feature.
A lucky little 8-year old girl from Hartsburg, named Taylor Ditzfeld, won
the Jr. Race Fan Club bicycle give-away this week. It was sponsored by Chuck's
Auto Body, with the B-modified #2B that had the pole for the feature and was
driven by Mr. Chuck Melloway of Hallsville. As a commentary, this shop does some
of the best paint work around, folks, just in case you're interested. And now,
how do you rate the odds of this on the 50/50 drawing? For the 4th time in 5
weeks, Warren Ross of Bynumville, MO, took home the pot again this week. Might
just need to limit his ticket purchase to a single one next time.
Next week on July 23rd, the five classes of A- and B-Modifieds,
Sportsman, Hobby Stock and 4 cylinder Hornets will all be running. The Thunder
Trucks will join in the action for their turn on the schedule. Dirt Track Racing
at its Best begins at 7pm with a driver's meeting, followed by hot laps,
starting at 6pm. Kids ticket prices are $3 for ages 6 to 12, and adults are $9
for the grandstands. Pit passes are only $20. Please see the website of
