 6-25-2005 - Race Review

By: Ron Lueck

The clay track was watered and almost ready to go, but it still was one warm night for the 89 race teams that came to 24 Raceway at the beginning of hot laps at 6:15. The only breeze seemed to come from the racecars as they powered through the high banks of the Moberly track.

After the intermission, the first of six feature races started off with 19 Hobby Stock cars. Clarence's Chad Walter started from the pole position with Clinton Dale of Cairo completing the front row. When the green flag dropped, the red & yellow 88s-car of Kirksville's Jerry Shoemaker shot to the front for the 1st lap, until Walter's turn 4 spin collected the other red & yellow car, the 51 of Alan Hultz, on the 2nd lap. Another 2 laps and another pair of spins by Tom Creed and Aaron Prather still had Shoemaker holding down the front position. After the lap 4 restart, Dale made the pass on Shoemaker and held onto the lead for the remainder of the laps, despite a great effort by Larry Krog. Krog, a former winner from Clarence, gave Dale all he could handle in this feature. Kevin Renzelmann Moberly was back at the wheel of the 41-car after a two week layout and took 3rd.

The Thunder Trucks made their bi-monthly appearance next. Jason Oser of New Franklin was also back with his pea-green #69 truck, after being absent for the 1st part of the season and led the initial lap. Dave Kinder took over the lead on lap 2 and led until the white flag lap. Jimmy Pool of Moberly had a hard hit into the grandstand wall that collected the 40-truck of Higbee's Deeno Smith and tore the side off of Pool's truck. Words flew, then arms, a red flag, and then a racing jacket - but no fighting. After the extended clean-up, Kinder of Moberly led the way to the finish line over Oser, with Rick Thompson's #18 crossing the line for 3rd.

Nineteen Hornet class cars started the feature behind a 1st row of Jeff Hilderman of Mexico and Josh Langhammer of Columbia. Hilderman's red #74 and Langhammer's #22 raced side by side until on the 2nd lap, about 5 cars beat on each other through turns 1 & 2. This wrecking action took out Eric Burks and John Brown for the 1st caution of the race. This time on the restart, Langhammer's dark green #22 took over the lead when Hilderman made a spin in turn 4 to bring out the 2nd caution. Langhammer held onto the lead, but Kenny Edwards' 25-car and Rob Chase in the 3-car were coming on strong. In the remaining 8 laps, there were plenty of challenges by the two, but Josh Langhammer kept the hammer down to secure his first-ever win. Edwards, also of Columbia stayed in the 2nd position for those 8 laps and finished ahead of former track champion Chase.

Columbia's Keith Davis got to start from the pole in the A-modified class for possibly the 1st time. The #85D of opening week winner Mark Dotson took that lead away on the 1st lap and Brandon Lennox came following along as if his #17 was attached. On lap 4, David Holder, winner of the 7 races following Dotson's 1st win, hit the turn 3 wall, stopped and then collected cars of Kyle Spry and Jon Melloway. With a red flag to remove the wreckage, Dotson and Lennox were lined up to go at it again. The restart saw Cameron's Dotson out in front once more, with New London's Lennox giving him something to think about. Davis was trying to hold off Winfield resident, Kenny Mudd in the #66, but Mudd eventually got around. By lap 14, leaders started coming through the rear of the field, but Dotson kept the lead for all the laps to gain his 2nd victory of the year, and by a good margine over the next two cars of Lennox and Mudd.

In the Sportsman class, 13 cars started with Jeff Creed and Clinton Dale, both from Cairo, getting the front row positions. The initial lap saw former feature winner Larry Minor hit the turn 3 wall and then proceeding into the pit area, calling for a complete restart. Running 5 wide into the turn caused another complete restart from some position jumping, and Creed got to start it off once more. Creed in the #01 and Dale's #12 ran 1-2 for the entire race with Huntsville's Pete Agee moving up to 3rd by lap 6 and finishing there.

The final race of the night was the Moberly Motors B Modified race, with Kelly Smith in his #82 and Kevin Embree from Paris in his #61 on row 1. It was all Smith for the first 5 laps, until a spin by Rob Maxwell's #00 collected Matt Stevenson's car #43 and sent the yellow flag flying. Jonathon Petersheim did a good job avoiding the two stopped cars in his yellow #18. The restart saw Kirksville's Smith moving back out front, while the 32-car of Columbia's Brad Pfeiffer traded off 2nd place a few times with the 7-car of Jimmy McKenney from Linneus. While these 2 cars were working on 2nd and 3rd, the battle for 4th was between Chuck Melloway of Hallsville, Chris Leathers of Macon and Embree. On lap 6, 1st time visitor Eric Johnson hit the turn 4 wall and brought out the 2nd caution. After another caution on lap 11, the field was bunched up once more, but Smith simply worked his magic and led all the laps for the win. Pfeiffer got the 2nd place finish, after initially taking over that position on the 1st lap, and his best finish yet. McKenney got third and Leathers got his #17 into 4th place.

Next week, on Saturday July 2, will be the annual FIRECRACKER FORTY, with this year being a tribute to long time track employee Oscar White, who passed away this last winter. L & J Development, Inc. located at 105 North Avenue in Moberly is the sponsor for this race, their second year of being on board. Laura and Jeff Lawrence are proud to be a part of this racing program here at 24 Raceway, Moberly, Missouri. And, as in years past, the night concludes with a grand fireworks display after the big show, brought to you in part by the Best Western / Moberly Inn and Bentz GM Country of Macon and furnished by J & M Displays out of Yarmouth, Iowa.

The large field of A-Modifieds will compete for a $1000 first place prize in a 40-lap feature event. A registration fee of $60 will be charged for the car and driver together on the regular members of 24 Raceway. For non-members, the car & driver registration is $80. Also filling out the scedule for the night will be the four classes of B-Modifieds, Sportsman, Hobby Stock and 4 cylinder Hornets. This will be a double points racing night for all four of these classes. Dirt Track Racing at Its Best begins at 7pm with a driver's meeting, followed by hot laps, starting at 6pm. Kids ticket prices are $5 for ages 6 to 12, and adults are $12 for the grandstands. Pit passes are only $20.

June 25: The Jr. Race Fan Club winner of the bicycle, co-sponsored this week by Agee Plumbing and Elite Tires, both of Moberly, was seven year-old Megan VanHoosen of Moberly. And here's a first for the season: last week's 50/50 drawing winner was Warren Ross of Bynumville, MO. Well, with not only coming back to the track, but also entering the 50/50 again, he is the lucky winner for two weeks running. Last week was a $128 win and this week, he won the pot of $152. Looks like it pays rather well for Warren to make that 35 mile drive. In the Kansas Speedway ticket give-away, Chris Mozingo of Madison won two tickets to the July 2 Craftsman Truck Race. These were sponsored by Dave & Tonja Kinder of the Kinder Machine Shop in Moberly. Dave races the #3 in the Thunder Truck class and the #23 in the A-modified class. And for the July 3 Indy Car Race, also at Kansas Speedway, two different sets of tickets were given out. Vern Cordray won the two seats, again sponsored by Kinder Machine Shop, and Carla Jo Anderson was the winner of two tickets to the same Sunday race, courtesy of Kelly Smith, racing the #82 in the B-modified class.
