 6-18-2005 - Race Review

By: Ron Lueck

Five classes competed this Saturday night of June 18 at Moberly's 24 Raceway, with 101 race teams showing up, each attempting to win their respective feature race. Following the five features, the second Powder Puff was scheduled to run with 20-some women having signed up to race either Hobby Stock or 4 cylinder Hornet class cars. Due to an unfortunate hard crash just as the race was to be given the green flag start, the event had to be canceled for the night.

Nikki McCarty of Moberly, and wife of modified racer Mike McCarty, was driving the #51 Hobby Stock Chevy she had borrowed from Alan Hultz. As she rounded turn 4 and coming to the line for the start, the car lost the grip on the dry/slick racing surface and went into the wall at the north end of the grandstand area. The car spun up the track while missing others coming to the line also, and hit the wall with the left front bumper, then slamming the driver's side into the concrete wall. With the race stopped, emergency crews, track personnel and medics attended to Nikki, stabilizing her inside the car and then removing her to the waiting ambulance. She was taken to the Moberly Regional Medical Center and later air-flighted to the University of Missouri Trauma Center in Columbia for a complete analysis of her situation. The initial check out revealed nothing broken and no major injuries, but she is being held at the Med Center for further testing and observation. Always in true racing spirit, when Nikki was being removed from the car, one of her concerns was on the damage to the car itself. Nikki and her mother-in-law, Sandra are the ones who handle the Jr. Race Fan Club sign-up for the weekly bicycle give-away to a lucky young fan in the grandstands. The two of them organize all of the weekly give-aways to the crowd, furnished by area sponsors. Management and staff at 24 Raceway, Moberly, MO wish to extend our thoughts and prayers to Nikki and her family for her quick and complete recovery.

In racing action for the night, Hobby Stocks started off the evening, or it should be said, they tried to get a race started, but after some 5 or so attempts, Larry Krog of Clarence finally led the 1st lap under green with Alan Hultz leading the next 4, until the cars of Bruce Bailey, Chase Breid and Tom Creed mixed it up in turn 2. With time having ran out, a couple more attempts at a green-white-checkers finish produced Alan Hultz of Madison as the winner, followed by Jerry Shoemaker from Kirksville and Krog.

Last week's winner, David Lorton of Moberly, had the pole position for the Hornet class and led the first 3 laps, until the first yellow flag of 3. From there on, the lead and win went to Eric Burks of Fulton, his first at 24 Raceway.

In the Moberly Motors B Modified race, Macon's Tony Garner and Kirksville's Kelly Smith started together on the front row, but Smith moved out to a strong lead. By lap 5, the front runners were coming up through the rear of the field, with the battle to watch being between Chuck Melloway of Hallsville in the 2B, and the car #11 of Gary Wilson of Holliday. When the 40-car of the usually strong David Holder went off the track with a lot of smoke, no caution was called and Smith went on to the win, leading all the laps over Melloway and Wilson.

The Sportsman cars of 3 and 3k started the front row, with Joe Smith in the black 3-car and Bob Ketterer in the other. Four-wide racing coming out of turn 2 saw Mexico's Ketterer take the lead for lap 1 and then a yellow flag. A 360° spin by the 7B car of Stuart Burton in turn 2 on the restart did not slow the racing, and when Burton went to pit, his speeding through the pit area caused him to be DQ'd and not allowed back out. Meanwhile, racing on the track had Pete Agee come to the front and lead the rest of the way for the win, the second of the season for the Huntsville resident. Larry Minor of Moberly was 3rd, followed by Clinton Dale of Cairo.

In his season return to 24 Raceway in an A-mod, former track champion Vance Wilson of Frankford started from the pole position along side Bill Baker of Hannibal. With the green flag signal, Hank Delonjay shot to the lead to show the way for the other 20 A-modifieds, all of whom were going after the extra bounty $$ on 7-time winner David Holder of Clarence. Wilson was driving the 22c-car, formerly driven by Terry Cox, and for only the second race. Wilson kept getting a fender on Delonjay and along with Brandon Lennox in the 17-car, gave some great challenges. But neither could get around the 35-car of Quincy, IL native Delonjay in the 20-lap feature. A second battle was going on behind these 3 for 4th place between Cecil Graves, Mike Chasteen and Kenny Mudd. Graves of Fulton held his own in the 4th position until lap 17. Then Winfield's Mudd moved into 4th and finished there, just ahead of Holder. Delonjay got the win, followed by Wilson and Lennox.

Next week, June 25, the Thunder Trucks will return to be added to the five feature races of both A- and B-Modifieds, Sportsman, Hobby Stock and 4 cylinder Hornets. Standard grandstand admission is $9 for adults and $3 for kids, 6 to 12 years old. Hot laps are at 6:15pm following the driver's meeting and racing begins at 7pm.

The Jr. Race Fan Club winner this week of the bicycle, sponsored by Kinder Machine Shop of Moberly was eight year-old Samie Woodrow of Perry. Warren Ross of Bynumville, MO won the 50/50 drawing for the evening, netting him a cool $128. Don't forget to sign up for the chance to win tickets to Kansas Speedway events coming up in July. Two tickets to the Craftsman Truck Race on July 2, donated courtesy of Kinder Machine Shop in Moberly, and 2 tickets to the Indy Car Race on July 3, also courtesy of the Kinder Machine Shop, are to be drawn at the intermission on the race night of June 25 at 24 Raceway. The winning name pulled from the box MUST BE PRESENT TO WIN, so don't miss out on your chance to attend some racing at Kansas Speedway, while enjoying the racing this Saturday at Moberly's 24 Raceway.
