 4-9-2005 - Race Review

 By: Ron Lueck

Some 1,700 race fans in the stands. A 108 racecar count. Only seven caution flags in six classes of great racing. One up & coming NASCAR superstar (and his younger brother's first race). Plus NO problems!!! Put this mix in a pot, stir a little, and out came a great opening night at 24 Raceway in Moberly, Missouri on this Saturday of April 9.

And get this: Carl Edwards put this personal appearance together by 11:00 on Thursday. By Friday, a half page ad was in the Columbia paper for it, and the Roush Racing Team that he drives for, overnighted plenty of give-away stuff. Carl left Martinsville, VA after the Saturday qualifying of his #99 Office Depot Ford for Sunday's Advance Auto Parts 500. He landed in Columbia for the 40 mile drive to Moberly with his family, and then both watched brother Kenny Edwards finish 3rd in the 4-cylinder Hornet class, and also did some driving of his own in the A-modified class.

Carl signed autographs before his racing in a borrowed car, the #23 A-modified belonging to Dave Kinder from just across Hwy 24. And to make it efficient for Edwards to come and view his younger brother Kenny run his first race, a corporate jet was borrowed from Roush teamate Mark Martin. The pilot jumped the jet from Columbia to the Moberly Airport, refueled there and picked up Carl at 11pm Saturday after the A-mod race. To complete the show, the jet did a crowd pleasing fly-by over the track when leaving for the return to Martinsville. It's hard to top that for an opening night! Many thanks go out to Carl Edwards for the return visit, and a word of thanks to Dave Kinder for the furnishing of a ride.

Next Saturday, the Northeast Missouri Dwarf Cars will be making their first showing at 24 Raceway, and the 4-cylinder Hornets will be participating in the season's first special event. The adults' admission is $9 and the kids admission, 6 to 12, is only $3. Pit passes are $20. The results from Saturday night can be viewed here, with the first race of the season being the same as the points standings.
