- Hornet and Dwarf Car Special |
By: Ron Lueck -
Track Spokesman
Great weather, a good crowd of race fans and 111 race teams to put on
the show for them, made for an enjoyable evening of racing at 24 Raceway in
Moberly, Mo. It was night of two special events with both the 4 cylinder Hornet
class and the
Northeast Missouri Dwarf Car Association each competing for $250
in 1st place prize money.
An afternoon racecar show preceded the night's racing schedule at the
Northgate Shopping Center on the Business Loop in Moberly. Votes were cast for
the favorite racecar by placing a penny in the cup next to the car. The overall
winner was the #19 Hobby Stock of
Aaron Prather from Cairo, gathering in $22.67
to get a trophy and a pit pass for the night. Clinton Dale got 2nd with $14.00
in votes for his #12 Sportsman, and the #7 Hobby Stock of Ron Reamy came in at
3rd place with $7.60. The real winner was the Randolph County 4H, being given
some $50 from the penny voting proceeds.
The Hobby Stocks were the first race of the night with the #51 of Alan
Hultz starting on the pole and #7, Clinton Dale, completing the front row. On
the first lap in turn 3, Dale and Hultz got together in what's considered a
racing incident to bring out the 1st of 3 early caution flags. Madison's Hultz
got the worst of it, spinning into the inside wall and ending his race with a
wrecked front end. After 2 more cautions from more damaged front ends in the
next 3 laps, Dale, of Cairo, led most of the remaining race until the final turn
on the final lap when he had a run-in with the 26 car of Moberly's Shane Stone.
This allowed Clarence's Larry Krog to come through the wreck area for the win,
with the #88s of Kirksville's
Jerry Shoemaker nabbing a 2nd place finish. Dale
did come in 3rd, but was later DQ'd, thereby moving Tom Elsen up a notch in car
#11, also from Clarence.
Those neat little Dwarf cars had the second feature of the night, going
20 laps for a $250 prize. It was the first of the five scheduled monthly events
for the Northeast Missouri Dwarf Car Association at 24 Raceway with 13 race teams
in attendance. The strong #64 of David Rafferty, coming in from Independence,
was on the pole. This was the position he started with, maintained throughout
the entire race and finished with, leaving the battle for 2nd place. The 3v of
Wade Vandelicht from Ashland, Vandalia's
Benny Burnett in his #40, and Fulton's
Caleb Chapman in his #46 put on the show here. On lap 13, Chapman slowed, while
on the other side of the track,
Mark David of Mexico and
Steve Schaefer of
Palmyra mixed it up and brought out the yellow. After the restart and 7 more
laps, Burnett finished up with that 2nd place, leaving 3rd to Kelly Bergstrom's
#18 from Kansas City.
The 4 cylinder Hornet class also competed for $250 in a 20 lap feature,
with Blake Fishbeck in the red and blue #69 Hornet on the pole, next to last
season's champ,
Rob Chase in his #3. With 24 starters for this race, Fishbeck of
Moberly, led but lost the right front wheel & tire going into turn 4. The
restart saw the Clark native, Chase, in the lead. After plenty of paint swapping
and 4-wide racing, Javin Payne moved to the front in his #05 on lap 3. On lap 5,
the 01 car of John Brown and 1M car of Tom Dodson got together into the turn 4
inside wall, while the 77 car of Kyle Chinn lost a wheel. After the return to
racing, the #36x of Carence's
Dustin Boling swapped the lead with Payne until
lap 9, when Boling did his part for bringing out the 3rd red flag of this race.
Boling lost a wheel and flipped end over end, loosing wheels and a radiator in
the process. He emerged from the wreck soon after and waved to the crowd,
drawing an appreciation round of applause and thanks for being uninjured. Four
laps after the restart, on lap 13, Chinn's car got into the side of the #00 of
Don Grotsinger in turn 3, leaving him with a flat tire. Grotsinger continued
around the turn until steering problems caused a push of the #11 car of
Hallsville's Adam Melloway into the turn 4 inside wall. On the restart,
David
Lorton from Moberly had his turn up at the front in his 24-7 car, along with
Payne. On lap 14, Chinn was back out with a new wheel, but had a back stretch
run-in with the #12 car of
Brooke Hassler from Columbia. From then on, the
racing was clean with Russellville's Payne grabbing 1st, followed by Chase. The
black #25 car of
Kenny Edwards of Columbia hung around in 4th for most of the
race and wound up finishing in 3rd, ahead of Lorton.
Next up, the B-modifieds with 16 starters saw the # 11 of Holliday's
Gary
Wilson and the #3 of Perry's
Bob Woodrow fill out the front row. Before the
first lap, a spin by
Steve Robinson's #10 in turn 1 near Woodrow, caused a
restart. On lap 2 and in front of the stands, another spin involving Robinson
and the #2b of Andy Acton brought out the 2nd yellow flag. Woodrow went to the
front after the restart, with Wilson and Acton fighting over 2nd. Acton did a
spin in turn 4 on lap 9, again near the leading Woodrow, with Wilson threading a
very small needle to get by. Wilson then went up to take the lead for one lap
before falling back to finish 2nd, behind Woodrow. Brian Robinson of Moberly
took 3rd in his #19, with the #17 of Macon's
Chris Leathers coming in 4th.
Darin Boling, another Clarence resident, led the start of the Sportsman
class in the #8 car, along side the #12 of Clinton Dale. After a single caution,
the 12 car kept the lead for the entire race, with a hard challenge from
Pete
Agee in his orange #14 Chevy. These two finished 1 and 2, with last year's class
champion,
Jeff Creed coming in 3rd in the familiar #01 car.
And finally, the fast A-modified class completed the evening with 24
participants. An earlier consolation race saw the Hallsville brothers Melloway,
both
Jon and David on the front row, fighting to get a place in the starting
grid of 24 for the feature race. David did make it in with his #21m finishing
the consy behind the #85D of Mark Dotson and the #88 of Chillicothe's Lonnie
Hibner. Columbia's Scotty Roberts started the feature from the pole in his
colorful #25, with the #99 car of Lee Hibner, also of Chillicothe, on the
outside. Roberts ran a strong race down low from the start until the always hard
charging Kenny Mudd from Winfield got by in his #66 on lap 11. Mudd led the rest
of the race, until
David Holder, yet another Clarence resident, grabbed the lead
in the #7 car towards the end and relegated Mudd to 2nd. Danny Crane from
Columbia, ran strong - always near the front in his #78, and finished 3rd ahead
of Roberts in a good, clean and enjoyable feature race.
Thanks once again to all the sponsors for their many prizes donated and
won by both adults and kids alike. The 50/50 ticket winner was Pam Boling of
Lentner in the grandstand, with the winning ticket worth $227. Her sons just may
be looking for use of that prize money for their automotive expenditures.
