September 25-26 2004
Not one, but two nights' worth of racing stories are reported in this
column from the weekend. The final night this season for the regular Fall Racing
Series at 24 Raceway was held this last Saturday night, but there will be a
season-ending Cheater's Night Out on October 9, to go along with Speedbowl 2004,
the two day event on October 2 and 3.
For Saturday night, 91 race teams showed up to entertain the fans with
the six regular race classes. The Hobby Stock class started out the night with
the 01 of Mexico's Zack Taylor on the pole position. He led the first lap but a
spin in turn 4 caused the only caution and gave the lead to eventual winner,
Kevin Renzelmann from Moberly. Renzelmann, in the 24J, also gained the first of
two "hard charger" awards for the night. Rusty Sands in the 5s car came down
from the Unionville area to try out his hand on the track, and despite a last
lap-last turn spin, finished 3rd.
Hornet season champ, Rob Chase of Clark, put his familiar #3 on the front
row with the 24-7 car of David Lorton starting outside. The frequent 3-wide
racing of these 4 cylinder cars had Clarence drivers Dustin Boling in the #36
and Porter Collins in the #46 running out in front of the pack, to go along with
Chase and Moberly's Lorton. The 01 of Huntsville's John Brown and 05 of
Russellville's Javin Payne joined in with these four after a few cautions. But
Lorton was the one who kept the lead for the last half of the race, and ahead of
a strong challenge by Boling, the winner from the last two weeks.
If the B-modifieds have 24 starters, you have to expect some cautions
will take place, and turn 1 had a collection of four racecars early on: the #96
of Moberly's Mike McCarty, J3 of Milan's Jeff Eddy, Terry Hall in the #1 from
Macon and Ben Strain's #38 from Higbee all parked 'em together on lap 1. No
injuries, but only Hall could not continue. After a couple more yellows
involving David Holder in the #40 and Tim Atterberry from Fulton, driving the
borrowed #11w, and later, Columbia's Brad Pfeifer in the #32 and Clark's
Jonathon Petersheim in his #18, the race was won by Bob Woodrow. Woodrow, out of
Perry, Mo, pulled off his second win in a row in his green #3 car, followed
closely by the #82 of Kirksville's Kelly Smith, who received the second of the
"hard charger" awards. This would be $10 worth of fuel free, when purchasing $30
of fuel from Track Force of Kirksville, located in the infield each and every
Saturday night.
Pete Agee grabbed the pole for the Sportsman class, with his #14 Malibu,
and Moberly's Larry Minor started outside in car #57. Lap 2 saw the three cars
of Cairo's Jeff Creed, Marion Hooten from Mexico and Minor all taken out in turn
1. And for the second week in a row, Huntsville's Agee led the race from start
to finish, but with a very tough challenge coming from Darrin Boling in his #8
Camero from Clarence. Car #PMS1, driven by Tammy Korff, came in 3rd.
In the Thunder Truck class, David Kinder of Moberly started on the pole
for the 3rd time this month, led all laps and won all four September races in
his #3 Dodge. Rick Thompson of Clark, challenged with his #18 Chevy truck, did a
360° spin and did not lose a place while coming in 2nd. And after last week's
roll over by Larry Perkins of Clark, that purple and green #46 Chevy truck got
the engine and front wheels back into place good enough to finish 3rd.
Mark VanWinkle came to race in the A-mocified class at 24 Raceway for his
first time this season from Hannibal, and started on the pole in his car #24v.
And with a new number, the 002k car of Slater's Rick Kimberling was on the
outside of the front row. VanWinkle and the #6 car driven by Hallsville's Larry
Winn, traded leads early in the race, until mechanical problems put Winn in the
pits. After the 3rd yellow of the race, Roger Moser of Auxvasse put his #27m
into 2nd. But with all the cautions, Moser's fuel supply ran out on the last lap
in turn 4, allowing the 35 of Quincy's Hank Delonjay to grab 2nd place.
Thanks to the Brittingham Cattle Farms, Mich Sapp of Clark will have a brand new
bike for years to come, after his name was drawn as the prize winner for the
Junior Race Fan Club. Jim Brittingham was the pace truck driver for all six
feature races in the new red Chevy Club Cab pickup, furnished by Bentz GM
Country of Macon, and thanks go out to him and his wife Donna for their support
in the bike give-away program.
Both the grandstand and pit area 50-50 pot proceeds for the evening went
to help the North Central Missouri K-9 Search & Rescue Unit in their strictly
voluntary operation. The search dogs seen walking around the track were named
Sallie, Lady and Digger, and seemed to enjoy the attention. The grandstand pot
of $87 was won this evening by Jim Hendricks, local supporter of the track's
activities.
Results from last Saturday, September 25 can be viewed after each Monday
on the website of
www.24racewayinmoberly.com.
And for the Sunday night part of the two-night event, race fans
got a real treat. The field of 22 of the fast 360 cubic inch Sprint cars from
the Winged Outlaw Warriors finished out their 2004 season here at 24 Raceway
with a great show on this half mile track.
The #21 car of Brian Brown was one fast sprint car, running way out front
in his heat to secure the pole position. Rusty Potter from Boonville started
alongside Brown in his #3P on this last race for the season. The #14, an older
back-up car of Randy Martin's, moved into the 2nd spot early on from a row 2
start. But the California (Mo) driver faded back after the strong running #86
car of Doug Wilson hit the turn 1 wall on lap 3 for the 1st caution of the race.
Martin gave way to the 5H car of Bobby Hawks from Jacksonville, Illinois, who
went on to finish 2nd behind that awfully fast #21car of Brown's. Brown never
once trailed, even with 2 more yellows to bunch up the field before crossing the
finish line. Potter stayed in contention and came home 3rd, in front of the 71
car of Mike Trent from Columbia.
Also running in this special with the sprint cars on Sunday evening were
the the B-modifieds, 4 cylinder Hornets and Sportsman.
The 4 cylinder Hornets had 12 cars start out the night with the #0 car of
Jimmy Borgmann from Jeff City start from the pole, next to the 1B of Mike
Burchett. On the 1st lap, Borgmann collected the 01 car of John Brown,
Huntsville, who came charging back and hit Borgmann in the driver's door, only
to get disqualified and sent home early. David Lorton's 24-7 car then took over
the lead with Dustin Boling close behind in his #36 car. Lap 3 saw the Clarence
native, Boling, move to the front, lead all the remaining laps and win over the
24-7 car, moving Saturday night's winner, Lorton, to 2nd place.
The Sportsman class had the #3 of Tim Eravi from Moberly start up front,
with the 88s of Jerry Shoemaker from Kirksville starting outside him. Racing
4-wide into turn 1, the 01 of Jeff Creed took only 1 lap to move up and take the
lead over the #14 of Pete Agee. Lap 9 saw a turn 4 spin by Agee, forcing him to
the back of the field. Agee wound up coming right back up to take 2nd at the
end, with Eravi getting 3rd.
Next up, came 18 B-modifieds with the 20 car of Tony Garner of Macon, on
the pole. The DJ1 car of Charlie Baker, a LaBelle resident, started in the front
row, outside. And this race too, had 3-wide racing early, with Chris Leathers,
also from Macon, putting his #17 car into the lead. Leathers then had a turn 4
incident with the 82 car of Kelly Smith, allowing the #40 car of David Holder
and the #3 of Bob Woodrow to battle for the lead. Then Holder's engine blew and
sent the Clarence driver to the infield. This left the 3 car of Woodrow racing
with the #63 of Lance Cox of Mexico, Smith, and also the 11w of Hallsville's
Larry Winn, charging up from the middle of the pack. Cox went on to the win,
followed by Kirksville's Smith, with Winn getting 3rd.
Sunday night, Shilby's Tire and Wheel of Columbia donated two bikes to
the Junior Race Fan Club. The first was won by 12 year-old Evan Clark of Higbee,
and the 2nd went to Dominick Guthrie, a 7 year old resident of Moberly. Thanks
go out to Sherry Embree for her assistance with trophy presentations after the 4
Sunday night wins. And thanks, once again to Jim Brittingham as pace driver in
the red Chevy pickup from Bentz GM Country.
The grandstand 50-50 pot of $301 certainly made Josh Smith of Kirksville
a happy race fan for the evening (as if the sprint car show was not enough).
Bentz GM Country of Macon will sponsor SPEEDBOWL 2004, a two-day racing
