September 11 2004
Another great night of weather saw 80 race crews participate in the
regular Fall Racing Series at 24 Raceway this last Saturday night, September 11.
About a dozen new drivers came out for their first visit of the 2004 season to
the high-bank racing in Moberly, Missouri. And the staff at 24 Raceway hopes the
armed service personnel, police, e.m.s. and fire fighters enjoyed their
admission at no charge as a way of saying "thanks for what you do" while
remembering the events of 2001.
The Hobby Stock class kicked the night off with the #51 car, driven by
Jacksonville's Wayne Walter, leading the first lap from his pole starting
position. The only caution flag came from a turn 4 spin by the 88s of
Jerry
Shoemaker from Kirksville. Shoemaker started on the outside of the first
row, spun early in the race but came charging back, went into the lead and won
the race after having led most of the laps. Walter came in 2nd and
Lucas Galland
from Huntsville got 3rd.
Then the Northeast Missouri Dwarf Cars came in with that strong running
#69B of Justin
Buckholtz starting out from the pole. Buckholtz, from Pleasant Hill,
Illinois, led all the laps and won, with newcomer Glen Province from Irondale
finishing 2nd after starting his #14 alongside the #69B.
John Brown secured the pole in the 4 cylinder Hornet field of 18 cars,
with another first-timer from Columbia, Josh Langhammer, starting his #26 car in
the front row next to him. A first lap spin by the 69 car, driven by Eric Burks
out of Fulton caught up both Brown and
Porter Collins
in his #46, causing a red flag and restart of the race. Moberly resident
David Lorton was
then on the front row and went into the lead after the restart with his 24-7
car. That is, until the final 4 laps when
Dustin Boling
from Clarence pulled off a pass and went on to the win in his familiar #36 for
the second week in a row. Lorton took 2nd, with Collins, also from Clarence,
taking 3rd place.
Out of the 17 B-modifieds starting out, only the 61 car of Kevin Embree
from Paris was unable to get in a lap from a first turn incident with the #40 of
David Holder. With the 5% car of Hugh Eddy from Milan on inside and the 19 car
of Brian Robinson from Moberly on the outside, these 3, together with the #32
car of Columbia's Brad Pfeifer, were the strong front runners until
Jerry Taylor from
Moberly did a spin in turn 4. Holder took over the lead from Eddy's #5%,
stretched it out and won. Clarence's Holder had a night to remember as he was
also the winner of the 50-50 pot in the pits, netting an extra $172.
After last week's Sportsman class' extra $ from Hendricks' Communication
were claimed by Pete Agee in his orange #14 Chevy, he came back to start this
week's race from the pole position. Huntsville's Agee went on to lead all laps
in the field of 8 starters, and won his second race in two weeks. And once again
this week, the #73 car of Columbia's
Alan Bergfield
put on a front stretch show for the crowd, after crossing the finish line in 5th
and then getting some serious right side air time in a tangle with the #30 car
of Moberly's
Charlie Rindom. Both cars continued on to the pits as if it was no big deal.
While the #00 Thunder Truck, driven by Jimmy McKenney, led the first lap
from the pole, he was off the pace early. And coupled with a spin by the #47
truck of
Eddie Campbell from Clark, the door was opened for the #3 of Moberly's Dave
Kinder take the lead, which he held all the way to the finish. The #18 of
Rick Thompson,
also of Clark, and McKenney from Linneus ran 2 and 3 the rest of the way to
place 2nd and 3rd.
An exciting A-mod race started their 11 cars with Roger Moser from
Auxvasse on the pole in his #27m and David Holder on the outside in the #7 car.
Holder pulled off a smooth pass around Moser, until after 5 laps Moser grabbed
the lead back. On lap 10, the #17 of Brandon Lennox from New London passed the 7
car and was charging hard to get the lead from Moser, but the 27m car was just
too much and got the win in a close race. Holder went on to finish 3rd, to go
with his two other wins for the evening.
A little gal from Chamois named Amber Bonnot won the kids' bike in the
bicycle give-away for the Junior Race Fan Club, co-sponsored this week by In
Racing from Moberly, and Glawson Concrete & Construction from Eldon. Next week,
Kirksville's Kelly Smith has made mention of something a bit different being
given away for the kids' Jr. Race Fan Club. ??????? You'll have to just come to
the track Saturday night to find out. And the lady from Moberly winning the $141
in the grandstand 50-50 pot will likely be back to try her luck again.
Thanks to those businesses donating the night's give-aways, among those
being: Jimmie Payne's Photo Booth of Columbia, and to KZZT fm 105, Daylight
Diner, the Funny Pages Cafe and Bloomin' Idiots, all of Moberly.
Results from last Saturday, September 11 can be viewed after each Monday
on the website of www.24racewayinmoberly.com, administered by
Sam Smith.
It's all happening again this Saturday at 24 Raceway, Moberly, Missouri,
brought to you in part by Best Western/Moberly Inn and Bentz GM Country of
Macon. This coming Saturday, September 18 and as a result of the rainout from
August 28, $1 from each grandstand ticket will be given towards the Dream
Factory that was so generously sponsored by Bentz on that rainy weekend of
August 27 & 28. And following the evening's six features this Saturday will be a
mechanics' race. If you've seen one of these, you would know why this race is
scheduled after the night's feature races. Come out to view this event, when the
guys turning the wrenches every week get a chance to actually drive on the steep
banks of Moberly.
Don't forget to mark your calendars for that W.O.W. winged sprint car
race coming on Sunday, September 26, along with the B-modifieds and Sportsman
classes (and likely one more class). This will be the second race of this season
for the W.O.W. 360 c.i. sprint cars at 24 Raceway in Moberly.
Dirt Track Racing at Its Best begins at 7pm. A driver's meeting, then hot
laps, start at 6pm. Six of the best stockcar classes of any of the area tracks
are taking place again this weekend, so don't miss out! Adult ticket prices are
$8 and kids are only $3 to get in. Pit passes are $20 with the pit gates opening
at 4pm.
