Orscheln Farm & Home of Moberly brought out a good crowd to their
night at the races, along with many give-aways on this Saturday the 21st of
August. And the 94 race teams didn't disappoint them with the great action at 24
Raceway in Moberly.
A first lap pile up in the Hobby Stock class, coming out of turn 2 caused
a red flag while involving the six cars of Bruce Bailey in the 5x; Mark
Forrester, last week's winner in the #10 from Macon; Jake Pike in the #17;
Clinton Dale in the #21; Joe Evans in his #55; and the 2C of Wendell Clayton,
Jr. After clearing the cars off the track, only Forrester and Pike were able to
return to racing. The four cars of Matt Snyder in the #22, Clabe Dougherty from
Fayette driving the #24J, Kirksville's Jerry Shoemaker in the 88s and the #51
car, driven by Wayne Walter went out in front and looked to be gaining quite a
bit of distance on the rest of the rest of the pack . That is until Dougherty's
car slowed, left the track on lap 3, but came back later only to lose a tire and
cause another caution. On lap 8, Pike from Anabel, Mo. did a few exciting barrel
rolls in turn 2, causing another red flag and destroying his red and yellow car.
All drivers were ok in both of the race-stopping wrecks. Green City's Snyder
went on to his 5th win this season in a tight finish with Walter from
Jacksonville in 2nd, and Shoemaker finishing 3rd.
A full slate of 20 Hornets had the 9m of Darren Morgan from Paris on the
pole, with Casey Walter in his #23 on the front row, outside and with a Pepsi
Challenge bounty of $100 on his fenders. After the 2nd row starter #69 of Blake
Fishbeck left on lap 2 with a broken ball joint/c-v joint, the cars of Walter,
Porter Collins in the #46, the #14 of Jeromy Milnes and the 24-7 car of David
Lorton drove away from the rest of this pack of 4 cylinder cars, until Moberly's
Milnes lost his right rear wheel. Collins went on to a close win over Walter,
collecting the first Pepsi Challenge of the evening in the dual of these two
neighbors from Clarence. Lorton, also from Moberly, came in third.
In the B-modifieds' feature, the front running #3 of Perry's Bob Woodrow
started from the pole with the #17 of Chris Leathers on the outside of row 1.
The 11w car of Hallsville's Larry Winn was crowded into the turn 4 wall on lap
1, with Woodrow going to the rear of the pack after getting charged with the
yellow. Gary Wilson of Holliday led the most laps in his green and white #11,
but could not hold on and finished 3rd for the race. The 10G of Keokuk's Jim
Gillenwater, trying out the B-mod class for the first time this year, came in
2nd. The #63 car of Mexico's Lance Cox made a late race pass that got the win.
Cox, in his first trip to 24 Raceway this season, also picked up an extra $200
due to the Pepsi Challenge defender Kelly Smith leaving the racetrack by
mechanical problems and not being taken out by another car. The payoff for that
short trip from Mexico should see the #63 coming back soon.
For a change, the #01 of Jeff Creed did not finish the Sportsman race
this evening, after six consecutive wins. On lap 4 of the race, as the #14 of
Huntsville's Pete Agee hit the inside wall in turn 4, Creed was limping into the
infield with transmission problems, unable to continue. Rick Girard from
Columbia started his #00 car on the pole, and led all laps, except for the one
that counted the most. The 28k car of Don Kanselaar ran a very strong 2nd to
Girard and pulled off a pass in turn 1 of that last lap to grab the lead and
give the Centerville, IA native the win. The win netted Kanselaar the extra
Pepsi Challenge bounty money, since Creed was not wrecked out of the race, but
had to leave by his own accord. In keeping with their promise to add some extra
$ to the Sportsman class in the hope of drawing a good size field, the
Hendricks' Communication Company is sponsoring an extra $300 into the pot for
this class next week.
The #18 Thunder Truck of Rick Thompson followed the same scenario as the
preceding Sportsman's race. Thompson, from Clark, started on the pole, and led
all the laps but the one that counts. Jimmy McKenney, driving the #00 truck,
came out of turn 2 with a pass that won the race for him, putting the #18 back
to 2nd. Moberly's Dave Kinder finished 3rd in the #3 truck.
In the fastest and final feature race, the A-modifieds had a front row of
the # 7 of David Holder from Clarence, inside, and the 22c of Terry Cox from
Troy on the outside. With the green flag dropped, the #66 of Vance Wilson came
up through the pack with a hard charge from the outside of a row 3 start.
Wilson, from Bowling Green, made the move in the first half lap to lead on the
backstretch, led the entire race and won over Holder in 2nd, and Hallsville's
Larry Winn, driving car #6, and finishing 3rd.
As an update on the Dwarf Car driver injured August 14, Don Robbins of
Lee's Summit is recovering at University Hospital in Columbia from a broken shin
and ankle sustained when his car cart wheeled on the backstretch, and fully
plans to be back racing again next season. Another driver, Larry Myers, and
competing in the same class of Dwarf Cars was injured critically on August 17 in
a single vehicle accident in his hometown of Laddonia and is hospitalized on the
same floor at University Hospital. The ownership and staff at 24 Raceway, wish
both Don and Larry well in their respective recoveries. Our prayers are with
them and their families.
Kannatha Sinclair from Moberly was the winner of the new bicycle from the
Junior Race Fan Club, co-sponsored by David Holder from Clarence (racing the #40
in the B-modified class, and also the 7 car in the A-modified class), along with
Gary and Diane Wilson of Wilson's Hot Rod Shop, Holliday (with Gary driving the
#11 B-modified). Next week, the bicycle give-away program will be sponsored by
Still Towing, LLC of Macon, (with Dean Still racing in the #00 Thunder Truck).
And once again, a big hearty thanks to Orsheln Farm & Home of Moberly for
their donation of plenty of prizes and sponsorship of the evening's races. And
thanks to all the other sponsors for their many prizes donated and won by both
adults and kids alike. These would include: Jimmie Payne's Photo Booth and
Hassler's Collectibles of Columbia; and to Auto Zone, Burger King, the Funny
Pages Cafe and Bloomin' Idiots, all of Moberly. Yet another thanks goes to 7year
old Jarrett McCarty of Moberly for all his assistance as the understudy to the
flagman, keeping those flags of his waving in the correct sequence.
The results, as well the list of season points accumulated by the
drivers, can be viewed after each Monday on the website of
www.24racewayinmoberly.com,
administered by Sam Smith (now gaining seat time in the Hornet car #77).
Whatever that glitch was that some may have encountered in getting to the site
is now corrected.
It's all happening again this Saturday at 24 Raceway, Moberly, Missouri,
brought to you in part by Best Western/Moberly Inn and Bentz GM Country of
Macon. You can find an updated schedule together with info for upcoming events
on our own site along with the various sites of Heartland Motorsports,
racin'boys.com, and who won.com. The flyer, with info on the B-mod 30 lap race
in two segments, format and the payout taking place on Labor Day weekend,
September 4, can be found on Heartland Motorsports' main page. M H C Kenworth of
Columbia is the primary sponsor for this 2nd annual B-modified event that last
year drew 54 B-mod racecars in its inception. Several new Kenworth trucks will
be on display in both the infield and up top at the grandstand area. The season
points racing is set to end this Saturday, August 28, and will be ending with a
double points night for all classes, with the Track Championship in both
modified classes, as well as the Thunder Truck class still up for grabs. And
don't forget about that extra $300 going to the Sportsman class this coming
Saturday. The company of Hendricks' Communication is in the process of
installing fiber-optic cable in and around the Moberly area throughout the next
six months or so, and will be in attendance at most of the races.
This Friday and Saturday, the Mid-Missouri Corvette Club, together with
Bentz GM Country of Macon, will be putting on a two-day benefit for the Central
Missouri Dream Factory, consisting of dinner, dance and auction on Friday night
(with the Krazy Kats at Bentz' dealership in Macon). A Saturday morning
breakfast will be followed by a Shine and Show with judging and awards
presentations for six Corvette classes and six other classes. The rumor mill has
several hundred cars lined up to attend and participate in this show. And
following the awards, a cruise to 24 Raceway in Moberly, to enjoy the night at
the evening's races will get organized around 3pm. A dollar from every ticket
sold for the grandstand seating at the racetrack will be going towards this
first annual "Cruise for the Kids", so come out to enjoy this promotion for a
worthy cause.
Watch for other promotions coming in September. On September 11, a
special admission is in store for fire, police, emergency medical staff and
military personnel with a valid photo i.d. This is also the sixth appearance by
the Northeast Missouri Dwarf Car Association scheduled at the track for the
season. And a winged sprint car event will be taking place on September 26, a
Sunday night, with the B-modifieds and Sportsman classes also competing (and
likely one more class). This will be the second race of this season for the
W.O.W. 360 c.i. sprint cars at the high-banked half mile of Moberly, and is a
show you don't want to miss.
Dirt Track Racing at Its Best begins at 7pm. A driver's meeting, then hot
laps, start at 6pm. Six of the best stockcar classes of any of the area tracks
are taking place again this weekend, so don't miss out! Adult ticket prices are
$8 and kids are only $3 to get in. Pit passes are $20 with the pit gates opening
at 4pm.
