If it's the 2nd Saturday night of the month, it must mean the
Northeast Missouri Dwarf Car Association is in the south pit area participating
with 13 of the 110 race teams and as one of the seven classes for the evening of
regular weekly racing at 24 Raceway in Moberly. Their feature this night had one
spectacular roll over in the first lap on the backstretch, with first time
visitor Don Robbins of Lee's Summit getting the worst of it and suffering a
broken leg and ankle in the mishap. His bright red #60 car got caught up in the
middle of the pack of 12 other Dwarf Car competitors, and in the next instant
was doing a flip or two into the cool night air. Track personnel were on the
scene immediately with the medical staff attending to him. Upon finding Robbins
to have stated initially that he was 'ok', the staff found that he had leg pains
requiring attention, and was transported to Moberly Regional Medical Center for
further assessing of his injury. Robbins was kept overnight at MRMC and on
Sunday, was transported to University Hospital for further medical attention. We
at 24 Raceway, wish Don Robbins well and sincerely hope for a quick and complete
recovery.
The Hobby Stocks were actually the first feature race of the night with
Lucas Galland from Huntsville in his #2 car taking the pole position. There were
several lead changes early on, but about half way through, Mark Forrester from
Macon took over the lead and stayed in front of the #28 of Callao's Tim Dawson
the rest of the way. The only caution came with three laps to go and Forrester
kept his blue and yellow #10 car in front of Dawson for his first victory at 24
Raceway.
Next up were the Dwarf Cars, with that race-stopping back stretch wreck.
The red flag came out just behind a clean start with the #46 of Caleb Chapman,
Fulton, and the 69B on the front row. The group of 13 cars got through turns 1
and 2 in a nicly spaced formation, until tightening up on the backstretch with
that incident putting a stop to the racing. That wreck pretty much destroyed the
new #40 car of Don Robbins after having raced only four times. After resuming,
the 69B, belonging to Justin Buckholtz from Pleasent Hill, Illinois, went on to
the win in a tight finish with David Kirkpatrick in car #35 while his old #6 car
was driven by Alan Adams, both of Memphis, MO.
After sitting out for a month, Blake Fishbeck was back with the red and
blue #69 Hornet on the pole again, next to the #46 of Porter Collins from
Clarence. Casey Walter, also from Clarence, took the lead early from the second
row after Fishbeck got squeezed back into the pack on the first half lap.
Walter's #23 Hornet then led the remaining laps to keep the Pepsi Challenge
bounty going on him after a week's layoff. Next time out, the driver winning
while Casey Walter is on the track will be picking up an extra $100. Collins
finshed 4th behind Dustin Boling, yet another Clarence resident, and Rob Chase
of Clark. The Pepsi Challenge for this 4 cylinder Hornet class maxes out at
$150. DeWayne Eravi from Moberly received the night's 'hard charging award' for
the Hornet passing the most cars in the feature. For his effort in the #5 car,
Eravi receives an award of $10 worth of fuel from the Track Force Supply railer,
located in the middle of the pit area.
And folks, if you haven't been out to 24 Raceway lately to see this A-mod
class, it is simply one of the best collection of talented drivers competing on
a regular basis in the open-modified division in the midwest. Last week's
winner, Terry Cox from Troy was on the pole in his #22c, but had to leave soon
after the green flag with mechanical problems. That left the #79 car of Ronnie
Gough, starting outside on the front row, to take over the lead and stretch it
out until the 1st caution midway through the race. Then, Kelly Smith from
Kirksville grabbed the lead with his #0 car and led the remainder of the laps
over Monroe City's Gough. Bowling Green's Vance Wilson in his always strong #66
finished third, and the #7 car of Clarence's David Holder got 4th place. In an
additional bonus going to the A-mod driver coming in 5th, sponsored by Connie's
Mobile Home Transport service of Sturgeon, Darren Walker, also of Bowling Green,
made an extra $100 over and above the 5th place payout.
Larry Perkins from Clark found himself in the pole position in the #46
Thunder Truck, but once the green flag dropped, Dave Kinder found a way to move
his #3 Dodge to the front to stay there for the rest of the race. The #48 of
Higbee's Leroy Riley hit the #18 of Clark's Rick Thompson and then went into the
turn 2 wall, leaving the night's bonus of $100 for 1st place going to Moberly's
David Kinder. With Thompson starting in the rear, moving up to 2nd and then
having to come from the back again after the incident with Riley to finish in
the 2nd spot, the Clark resident gets the 2nd 'hard charging award' of the night
courtesy of Track Force from Kirksville. Along with Kinder's bonus for the
night, the other truck participants each received an extra $50, all part of the
day's sponsorship by the CanAm Quick Stop and Carwash of Moberly and main
sponsor for Rick Thompson's Chevy Thunder Truck.
The Sportsman class saw the front row of Harold Fox in the 72 car, next
to the 007 of Jimmy Myers from Laddonia. The #01of Jeff Creed started from the
2nd row, but made a move to the front early on and led the majority of the race,
through the 2 yellow flag restarts. In the end, the #43 of Mexico's Marion
Hooten finished in the 2nd position behind Creed, with another Mexico resident,
Fox, coming in 3rd. Creed now has six consecutive wins, with the Pepsi Challenge
bounty set at the $250 maximum for any other Sportsman car defeating the points
leader Creed from Cairo on the track at the next race.
For the night's final feature race, the B-modifieds saw a car, new to the
track and in the pole position in the B-mod 11C of Don Cox, with the 11W of
Hallsville's Larry Winn starting outside. After a couple of cautions, Kelly
Smith led in the 82 car and went on to win over the #3 of Perry's Bob Woodrow,
and the #40 of David Holder. A second $100 bonus of the evening went to the 5th
place finisher Chris Leathers from Macon in his #17. And thanks to Chuck's Auto
Body of Hallsville for sponsoring this. The Pepsi Challenge is extended and for
this coming race will be at $200 for the B-mod that defeats the #82 of Smith's
in the next race, while Smith is still competing on the track. Like the
Sportsman, this bonus will max out at $250.
The pace truck was furnished by Bentz GM Country of Macon, and was a new
white Chevy Club Cab that led the seven features to their respective race
starts. Eight year old Maggie Hark from Hannibal, won the new red & blue bicycle
as the winner from the Junior Race Fan Club this evening, sponsored by Fuemmeler
Tax and Accounting Services, Moberly, featuring Pam Fuemmeler as an Enrolled
Agent. Next week, the kid's bike program will be co-sponsored by David Holder
from Clarence (racing the #40 in the B-modified class, and also the 7 car in the
A-modified class), along with Wilson's Hot Rod Shop of Holliday (Gary and Diane
Wilson, owners, and campaining the #11 in the B-modified class).
And thanks once again to all the sponsors for their many prizes donated
and won by both adults and kids alike. These include: Jimmie Payne's Photo Booth
and Hassler's Collectibles of Columbia; the push truck driver Oscar White for
five cap giveways; and Burger King, In Racing of Moberly, the Funny Pages Cafe
and Bloomin' Idiots, all of Moberly. The 50/50 ticket winner was Van Benner of
Moberly in the grandstand, with the winning ticket worth $245.
Next week will be Orscheln Farm & Home's ' Night At The Races' at 24
Raceway. There will be a pretty good selection of promotional prizes sponsored
by Orscheln, so for an admission price of only $8 ($3 for kids), you may just
come out with something like new tires for the car, when you thought you were
only coming to enjoy racing on a Saturday night !!
