Ninety two race teams were on hand at 24 Raceway for a pleasant
evening complete with that full "blue" moon for the crowd on this last Saturday
night. All fans coming in the gate received free coolie cups with Jeff Gordon's
# and signature, courtesy of the Miller Beer route drivers. Next week's big
events include a Hobby Stock Special with $400 to win and $250 for 2nd in a 20
lap feature, in addition to the drawing for the open wheel modified being
raffled off. For just $5, you can be taking this car home from the track if you
have the winning ticket! It's not too late to get your chance at this orange and
white racecar, being put up by the Melloway Race Teams out of Hallsville,
Missouri, but it will go to someone this coming Saturday, August 7. In the event
of a rainout, of course that would be delayed to the following week.
This night's features kicked off once again with the Hobby Stocks and
featured a good show from the #22 of Matt Snyder from Green City trying for two
in a row. Bobby McCartney from Kirksville, looked liked his #1 was glued to the
back of Snyder's as these two ran 1st and 2nd for the entire race. Even with the
lone caution flag coming when the #17 of Jake Pike hit the turn 2 wall and the
#10c of Moberly's Terry Coonfield blew an engine on the front stretch on the
same lap, Snyder still kept the lead. He led all laps from the pole until that
final turn when fans could see the expected dash coming. McCartney pulled out
and did what he had been planning the entire race - to lead that last few
hundred feet for his 1st win in just two trips to Moberly this season. As a
special bonus for the Hobby Stocks this night, a Hard-charging Award went to the
8th place finishing #5x of Bruce Bailey of Moberly for his passing of the most
cars in the feature. Bailey can get an extra $10 worth of fuel courtesy of Track
Force, Kirksville, Mo, with the purchase of $30 of fuel from Harley Harrelson's
operation in the infield.
Once again this night, the #3 Hornet car was driven by Kristi Chase from
Clark, and was on the pole with the #23 of Casey Walter starting outside. When
the flag turned green, the Clarence native, Walter, went for the lead and kept
it after the #3 car tangled with another in the back stretch and fell off the
pace. Later, the #3 and #10 car of Macon's Marvin Thompson got together with
Thompson hitting the turn 2 wall, taking both out of the race. It then became a
very good three car race between the #23, the #36 of Dusting Boling, also from
Clarence, and the #33 Hornet being driven for another week by Rob Chase. The
finish was the second consecutive win by Walter, thereby setting up a $50 Pepsi
Challenge next week for a win going to any of the other Hornet drivers defeating
him on the track.
This brought up the A-modifieds, featuring the #22c of Terry Cox on the
pole, next to Bowling Green's Vance Wilson on the outside in the familiar black
and orange #66. With a smooth pass, Wilson moved out front for a considerable
lead, ahead of Cox from Troy, Missouri, before the 1st of three cautions came
out. Between the first and third yellows being caused from spins by the 7R of
Tony Ratliff from Moberly, the L75 of Sturgeon's Eddie Whitney, and the 66T of
Darryl Turner from Columbia, there was some serious racing going on. During the
middle green flag parts of the feature, the #7 A-mod of David Holder, along with
Cox, were challenging hard for the lead. But after the 3rd caution on lap 12
went back to green flag racing, Wilson moved out front to stay at a comfortable
margin and took the win once again. Clarence's Holder finished ahead of Cox for
2nd place with the M1 of Cecil Graves coming in 4th ahead of the #27m, Roger
Moser and #0, Kelly Smith.
The Thunder Trucks started with the #3 of Moberly's Dave Kinder on the
pole and the #18 of Clark's Rick Thompson on his right. These two drivers ran
one - two the entire race without a caution flag! The #00 driven by Dean Still
from Macon came on strong from in back to take 3rd. This makes it two in a row
for Kinder's Dodge, who now has that Pepsi Challenge of $50 on his head for the
next truck race. One of the other Thunder Truck drivers must beat him on the
track to claim the bounty next time out.
Lots of three-wide racing in the Sportsman class saw Cairo's Jeff Creed
on the pole once more, with the 3k driven by Bob Ketterer of Mexico starting on
the outside and the #14 of Pete Agee from Huntsville starting in the 2nd row
behind Creed's #01. After going into turn 1 at three-wide from the green, Agee
ran on the rear bumper of the #01 for a considerable amount of the race, tapping
Creed several times. Agee was knocking on the door most of the race, but in
trying that last lap pass coming out of turn 4, there was just enough wobble to
force his #14 to settle for 2nd. And Ketterer was right there the whole race
waiting for his shot, taking third. By leading all laps, Jeff Creed got his
forth consecutive win, allowing the Pepsi Challenge bounty to go $150 for any
other Sportsman car defeating Creed on the track, also at the next race. And for
the second of the two special bonuses for the night, a Hard-charging Award went
to the 6th place finishing #43 car belonging to Marion Hooten and driven on this
night by Rick Girard from Columbia, for his passing of the most cars in the
feature. Thanks again to Track Force from Kirksville, either Hooten and/or
Girard can get that extra $10 worth of fuel free with the purchase of $30 of
fuel from Harley Harrelson in the infield.
And in the final race of the night, the B-modifieds once again put on a
good show, with the #3 pole sitter of Perry's Bob Woodrow trading leads with the
#82 car belonging to Kirksville's Kelly Smith, until Woodrow's car had to leave
with mechanical problems. Smith then led the last four laps to get his 3rd win
in the last three weeks, with the #11 modified of Holiday's Gary Wilson coming
out in 2nd in a battle with the #40 of David Holder from Clarence. This sets up
the bonus of a $100 Pepsi Challenge going to any other B-mod beating Smith on
the track also at the next time out.
A new red Pontiac Vibe, courtesy of Bentz GM Country in Macon, led the
six features to the green flag start for the pace laps on this full moon night.
And a special thanks to Nikky McCarty for her assistance with the night's trophy
presentations. Blake Dawson from Fayette took home a new bicycle as the winner
from the Junior Race Fan Club this evening. This week's thanks goes to the
Moberly residents of Dave Kinder (racing the #3 in the Thunder Truck class), and
Bob Hubert, aka "Mr. Mopar", for their sponsoring of the bicycle give-away
program. Next week's sponsor for the bike program is Kinder Machine Shop
(sponsoring the yellow #3 Dodge Truck). And thanks to all the sponsors for their
numerous prize donations won by both adults and kids alike. These include: KZZT
105 FM, Pepsi, Burger King, Debbie's Daycare, Funny Pages and Bloomin' Idiots,
all of Moberly, and The Island of Macon. And a 50/50 pot for the grandstands of
$195 was won by a lucky fellow in the grandstands, making for a nice night out
at the racetrack.
The results, as well the list of season points accumulated by the
drivers, can be viewed after each Monday on our website of
