Race Results ]
It was a rather smooth and enjoyable night of weekly racing for 24
Raceway's Fan Appreciation night, that is until the third to last lap of the
final feature for the evening, and it all happened in the fastest class of the
A-modifieds. A 17th lap crash in turn three caused a red flag to the race and
took out the top three running cars of
Kelly Smith (#0 from
Kirksville), Vance Wilson
(#66 from Bowling Green) and
Danny Lorton (#27
from Moberly), leaving
Ronnie Gough's #79 with a win for the first time this season. After the race
resumed, it was the old green, white, checkers dash to the finish line for
Gough, coming out of Monroe City. He had some wins at this track in the past 15
years with some time away from the racing here at 24 Raceway, and only recently
returned to race here again.
Here's the rest of the
results from 24 Raceway for Saturday, the 17th.
In the Hobby Stocks, the #22 of Matt Snyder from Green City returned to
the feature for the 1st time since
May 29, led all the laps and won again as he did on that last time out. The
#75 of young Brandon Bouzek came in at a solid second. Bouzek did pretty good in
his first time visit to the track from Trenton. Taking 3rd in the #1 car, was
Bob McCartney, also in his first trip to the track this season from Kirksville.
After that horrible starting sequence of a
week ago, the Hornet class had
no problems getting going with the return to Moberly of Ben Fishbeck, former
track champion, starting at his familiar pole position. He won those
championships in at least the two classes of Hobby Stock and Sportsman in 1998
and 1999. Fishbeck, now turning wrenches for the NASCAR's Hendrick Motorsports
Teams in Charlotte, NC, took the #69 car from the pole to what was thought to be
the win, by leading all laps. The #23 of Casey Walter was glued to the rear
bumper of Fishbeck's all the way through the race until that last lap, when the
Clarence native tried for a pass, but could not manage to pull it off. However,
after passing through the tech line, the #69 car of Fishbeck was given a DQ when
the rear suspension was found to have been modified. Walter was then awarded the
win and the other 12 cars moved up a notch in the results. The Clark area
husband/wife team of Rob and
Kristi Chase did a
car switch to see if Kristi's claim of the #3 Hornet having more power was
indeed true. And it did seem that the #3 driven by Kristi on this night did have
better power in the straights, with Rob trailing in the #33. But in the end, Rob
did wind up in 3rd with Kristi finishing two back in 5th. No more comment coming
here.
Next up, the B-modifieds put on a good show, with the exception of a few
cautions causing the 20 minute time limit to come into play. The #3 pole sitter
of Bob Woodrow led early from the pole until Lap 6 when the #82 car, belonging
to Kirksville's Kelly
Smith passed Woodrow's car from Perry. Smith then held on to complete his
2nd win in two weeks, and the second 1-2 finish in a row for Smith and Woodrow.
This sets up the bonus of a $50 Pepsi challenge going to any other B-mod beating
Smith on the track next time out. As a special bonus for the night, a
Hard-charging Award went to the 3rd place finishing #40 of David Holder for his
passing of the most cars in the feature. Sponsored by Track Force from
Kirksville, Holder's #40 car from Clarence can get an extra $10 worth of fuel
free with the purchase of $30 of fuel from Harley Harrelson's operation in the
infield.
In the Sportsman class, Clinton Dale from Cairo was on the pole as
substitute driver for the vacationing Pete Agee in the #14 car. But on lap one,
Jeff Creed took his
#01 out front and led the entire race to establish this Cairo native as the
season points leader. With his third consecutive win, the Pepsi Challenge grows
to $100 for any other Sportsman car defeating Creed on the track, also at the
next race.
The Thunder Trucks saw the #3 of Moberly's Dave Kinder get his third win
of the year with the #18 of Clark's
Rick Thompson
making an unexpected right turn into the wall midway between turns three and
four on the final lap. The #00 owned by Dean Still and being driven by Jimmy
McKenny from Linneus came in 2nd, which was just the reverse of last week's
finish between Kinder and McKenney.
And more on that A-modified final feature for the evening. The #0 of
Kelly Smith's looked to be on cruise, but not too far in front of the always
hard charging #66 of Vance Wilson's, until some oil from the #11 of Joey Roberts
caused a heck of an incident in the 3rd to last lap. Out of the three front
runners of Smith, Wilson and Danny Lorton, only Wilson from Bowling Green was
able to continue after the wreck, and at the back of the pack with some tie rod
repair work during race stopping red flag.
Ronnie Gough went on to
the win, followed by Clarence's #7 David Holder and the 22c of Terry Cox from
Troy. Roger Moser came in at 4th but by skipping the mandatory post race tech
inspection, the Auxvasse resident got a DQ and was awarded no points for his
effort.
Welcome to those family groups of racers coming out of the
Brookfield/Trenton/Bethany for their first trip to 24 Raceway this season. In
the three classes of A & B mods and Hobby Stocks, we hope to see cousins Joey
Roberts, Dave & son Brandon Bouzek, and their friends Dusty & Debbie Beaty
return more often to race safely at 24 Raceway.
A special thanks to
Danny Lorton for his
give-away of a remote control car and the picture postcards of his #27
A-modified, even though it became a part of the show on that lap 17 incident in
the final feature of the evening. Dustin Murry, age 11 from Mexico took home a
shiny red & blue new bicycle as the winner from the Junior Race Fan Club this
evening. Thanks to the week's co-sponsors for the kid's bicycle program goes to
Rick & Barbara Thompson with R&B Construction of Clark (racing the #18 in the
Thunder Truck class), Steve Roberts and Jerry Taylor of R & T Racing of Moberly
(racing the #10 and #27t, both in the B-mod class). Next week's sponsors for the
bike program are Dave Kinder (racing the #3 yellow Dodge Thunder Truck) and "Mr.
Mopar" Bob Hubert, both of Moberly. Thanks to all the sponsors for their
numerous prize donations won by both adults and kids alike. These include: KZZT
105 FM, Pepsi, Burger King, Sherry Gillispie, Debbie's Daycare and The Island of
Macon. A 50/50 pot for the grandstands of $102 was taken back home to
Jacksonville by Virginia Lucas, and made her evening out at the track a very
profitable one.
Results from last Saturday, July 17 are attached again with the number of
cars starting each feature in parenthesis. The results, as well the list of
season points accumulated by the drivers, can be viewed after each Monday on our
website of

If you haven't been to the track the past two weeks, you will notice a
new voice on the P.A. It belongs to Doug Mealy who's been announcing stock car
races in the mid-state area for a few years now, and doing a great job at it! A
special welcome goes out to Doug and his assistant, Stirling. Coming up this
Saturday evening at 24 Raceway, Moberly, Missouri, we will be back to the
regular weekly racing series for the first time this month. The orange and white
racecar being shown at the track, an open wheel modified without the engine or
transmission and courtesy of the Melloway race teams of Hallsville, is set to be
raffled on the night of August 7 during a Hobby Stock Special with the raffle
ticket prices at only $5 a chance! Don't miss the chance to get these tickets
while you can by purchasing them at the grandstand sign-up area where the other
prize give-aways are displayed. You do not have to be present to win, but the
best way to get one is to come to the races and buy your ticket! This is a
chance to either get into racing with a heck of a head start, or to upgrade from
one of the lower classes.
Dirt Track Racing at Its Best begins at 7pm with a driver's meeting, then
hot laps, starting at 6pm. Kids ticket prices are only $3 to get in and adults
are $8. Pit passes are $20. Brought to you in part by Bentz GM Country of Macon
and the Best Western / Moberly Inn.
