Wow! What a night for racing again this weekend
at 24 Raceway.
Around 1400 people and 102 racecars turned out at 24
Raceway in Moberly to enjoy some great racing, featuring the 5th annual Gary
Scott Memorial Sprint car event, along with the six weekly classes.
The Winged Outlaw Warriors provided the night's
high-light of entertainment, returning to the track for the first time in five
years. And this was during one heck of a storm and rain - threatened week, what
with Monday's and Thursday's severe weather doing some damage around the area.
The rain that was forecasted all week long, in particular for this evening, held
off until Sunday and gave the necessary two-day window that provided the folks
in attendance a great night at the races. And from all the positive comments
heard afterwards, this likely will be on the agenda again.
The combination of these 360 c.i. sprints and this longer track length of
2480 feet make for thoroughly enjoyable wheel to wheel racing for both the
drivers and the fans. The starting pole was won by Bobby Hawks of Jacksonville,
IL with an incredible time. In the feature, his #3h sprint car looked dominant
again until an early spin dropped him back in the pack. Randy Martin of
California, MO then put his #14 black Diamond car up front and led the rest of
the way, with Terry Hinck of Boonville keeping his #21h sprint car in second
while the front runners started lapping the rest of the field.
In the Pepsi Challenge, the classes of B-modified and the Thunder Trucks
had two new winners take home the bounty bucks posted on the fenders of repeat
winners Kelly Smith of Kirksville and Rick Thompson of Clark.
For the B-mods, David Holder's #40 led all laps, with
Smith's #82 coming up from a second row starting position to finish close behind
in 2nd place, gaining Holder an extra $50 win above the published purse.
Thompson's #18 Thunder Truck was involved in an incident
in the heat racing, but enough repairs were made to get it into the feature.
However, with his power steering knocked out, it looked like an easy win for the
#3 Dodge truck of Dave Kinder from Moberly, until the final lap. Dean Still's
#00 Chevy truck made a charge on the white flag lap, then surprised Kinder at
the line with a victory in the last five feet, maybe even closer than that!
Great way to come off with the extra $100 in addition to the first place
winnings to make a Still's drive back home to Macon a pleasant one.
In the other two classes hosting a Pepsi Challenge, the A-modified class
had its share of yellow flags, but still had a great dual going on. Kelly
Smith's #0 challenged and led for a while early on, but in the end it was Vance
Wilson's #66 winning his 5th straight feature.
The Sportsman too, had a race that saw Jeff Creed's #01
dueling it out with the #007 of Jimmie Myers from Laddonia, but this one was won
cleanly by Creed's car from Cairo. Both Wilson's and Creed's next competitors
still have those bounties available in their classes simply by beating them next
time on the track in the divisions of A-mod (an extra $200) and Sportsman (an
extra $100), respectively. One stipulation is that neither of them can be
wrecked out of their feature race by any other racers. If the car racing with
that Pepsi Challenge in effect, gets taken out, the entire challenge set up is
then delayed to another week. The person racing with the bounty on their car has
to be defeated in a fair racing format with the ability to defend their reign.
Once again this evening, plenty of give-aways were enjoyed by both adults
and kids alike. Many thanks to those who take the time and effort to donate
these great prizes. Some lucky woman (name withheld) took home the night's
winnings of something like $225 from the 50/50 ticket draw in the grandstand
area. And for this week, there was not just one, but three kid's bicycles given
away, donated by: Schilby's Tire and Wheel of Columbia; Centralia Auto Service
owned & operated by Harold Fox and Kent McCord; Morlan Racing with Mike Morlan
of Moberly; and Jackson Bothers Racing featuring Tony Garner of Macon. The three
bikes were won by Nick Kelly of Moberly- age 8, Shelly Harris of Keytesville-
age 12, and by April Smith, also of Moberly. And, in case you parents have not
figured out that this is an excellent way for kids to simply light up their eyes
by having their name drawn, just bring your kids out to the racetrack and see
what happens when yours become the next winner in this bike give-away. Kids
ticket prices are only $3 to get in. Adults are $8. Jonny Popper Kettle Korn and
shaved ice snow cones will be available on site, along with some very good
concession food.
The Northeast Missouri Dwarf Cars will make their return to the track
this next weekend, with their 5/8 scale replica cars powered by motorcycle
engines, so make plans now to come to 24 Raceway, Moberly for all seven of these
racing classes with Dirt Track Racing at Its Best! Racing begins at 7pm with a
driver's meeting, then hot laps, starting at 6pm.
