A total of 79 cars turned out this Saturday afternoon for the three
classes holding their qualifying for Sunday's Speedbowl at 24 Raceway in
Moberly, including the two classes of Hornets and Thunder Trucks that raced
their features on Saturday. All of this took place under a cloudless sky on a
cool day, following Friday's rain. And those who needed a good supper, found
just that in the pig roast that followed the end of Saturday's racing, around
5:30 pm.
The 4 cylinder Hornet class had 22 cars show up for their 14 lap race on
Saturday, but the two cars of #19, Aaron Prather of Cairo and #19w of Tommy
Wetherell from Fulton, got together in a backstretch incident that eliminated
them from the start. Rick Breid of Paris put his #1 car in the pole position
along side of the #11 car driven by Hallsville's David Melloway. After some
cleanup when Daric Crane's car lost a wheel in that same area of the backstretch
on lap 4 and caused the 1st of 2 cautions, the 05 car of Javin Payne jumped to
the lead and stayed there. Payne, coming up from the Russellville area, led the
last 12 laps to finish in first, ahead of the usually strong running #36 of
Dustin Boling from Clarence. Last Saturday night's winner, Moberly's David
Lorton came in 3rd with his 24/7 car.
Next came the Thunder Trucks class with Rick Thompson of Clark getting
the pole in his #18 truck. David Kinder of Moberly was on the outside of row 1.
And that was also the finishing order, as the determined Thompson led all laps
and found his way back to the winner's spot for the first time since last May
22. Thompson had a similar strong performance on August 21 with a win in sight,
only to lose on the final turn. He did exactly what he needed to do this
Saturday afternoon, so as to not let that happen again.
Results from Saturday afternoon for the features of these two classes,
along with the front row qualifiers for Sunday can be viewed on the website of
www.24racewayinmoberly.com.
